Time to Get Center'd
Posted on Jun 18, 2008 8:35:00 AM  |  By Erin—Manic Mommies

If you've ever tried planning a mom's night out, you know how frustrating it can be. Finding a location that's convenient for all that also has vegetarian options on the menu and valet service is bad enough. But then you have to nail down a date that works for everyone. Between kids' sports, business travel, community meetings and all else, planning a get-together among mom friends usually requires nothing short of two dozen emails. And at least one mom (usually the one who graciously volunteered to plan the event) is left muttering "never again."

Dotslogo Well folks, it's time to get Center'd. This new event planning site—developed by two busy tech executive parents—integrates local search, logistics, and community features in a single place. That's right, with Center'd you can pick a place, agree on a time, send invites, manage volunteers, and communicate with other members attending your event, all in the same online space. The site also features aggregated ratings and reviews from around the web so you'll know if the venue you're selecting is recommended by others.

141697637_1cea9f88e9_s Until now the site has been available by invitation only. Of course, it would have been helpful had I been able to join two months ago when I was bogged down planning our annual Manic Mommies Escape in November. I had a team of eager mom volunteers that I wanted to review potential destinations with and poll for their opinions. I wanted everyone to be able to see everyone else's comments, thoughts, and suggestions for the event. And I needed volunteers to take on a variety of tasks. This last part is key to the success of just about any event, whether it's a potluck church supper or neighborhood BBQ. Is it just me or does it seem like everyone wants to bring the hot dog rolls, but no one wants to make a fruit salad?

I don't know if Center'd could have totally helped me with my Escape planning, but I am willing to bet it would've been better than the three tools I patched together: email, conference calls, and my business Basecamp site. What's special about Center'd is the way the site pulls information about local venues and events already scheduled in your area. Events are searchable by category: sports, arts, family, festivals, conferences, etc. This is helpful information to have at your fingertips whether you're looking to attend a fun event or simply avoid planning one on an already popular date.

So if you've got something to plan this summer—whether a family reunion, birthday bash, or mom's night out—give Center'd a try.

And let me know if more people volunteer to help as a result of the clever online sign-up sheets!
