Black Friday Deals on Home Goods
Posted on Nov 20, 2009 10:00:00 AM  |  By Nykia Spradley

Typically I try to avoid Black Friday at all costs, but this year I'm considering braving the shopping elements and taking advantage of the deals. Considering the economic climate, both shoppers and retailers are looking for ways to recover a bit from the rough year. If there is an item that you've been itching to buy, now may be the time to get it. Stores will be vigorously slashing prices and consumers are ready to cash in on them. The key to surviving Black Friday is to go in with a plan, so I've compiled the list below (with the help of FatWallet.com), of this year's must shop home deals at various department stores. Do you love or hate Black Friday? What are you shopping for this year? Macy's 3-in-1 Bodywrap Blanket, 300-thread count Cotton Cover, Fleece Lining and Polyester Fill - $19.99 Any Size 3-pc. Down or Down-Alternative Comforter...

Streamline Your Holiday Card Mailing Process
Posted on Nov 19, 2009 9:00:00 AM  |  By ErinDoland

I'm the strange person who likes to take care of holiday cards the weekend after Thanksgiving. Experience has taught me that if I don't do it early in the holiday season, they just won't get done.

As a result, I'm already cleaning up my mailing list and figuring out how many cards I need to purchase. Here is one organized way to get your holiday cards into the mailbox before March 2010:

Have a digital address book: I use a Mac computer and Address Book is part of the basic operating system. If you're on a PC and use Windows, the Contacts list in Outlook does the same thing.

Over the course of the year, update this address book as necessary so that all of your information in it is correct.

Create a 2009 Holiday Card folder: In your digital address book, make a 2009 Holiday Card folder and drag all of your contacts into it that you wish to send cards to. (How to: PC)

Do You Bring a Hostess Gift to Thanksgiving?
Posted on Nov 18, 2009 5:48:04 PM  |  By KristinAppenbrink

Since I won't be traveling home for Thanksgiving this year, a friend's family has generously invited me to spend it with them. My mother raised me better than to ever show up empty handed to a gathering, but I'm a little bit stumped on Thanksgiving. It's not technically a potluck, since my only contribution will be pies. (I'll be making the Gingery Apple Crumb Pie and the Bourbon and Orange Pecan Pie from our November 2009 issue.) And I will of course bring a bottle or two of wine. But I need your advice on whether or not I should be bringing a traditional hostess gift. What do you think? Given my situation, should I bring something extra for the couple who's hosting? And do you have any Thanksgiving etiquette questions we can tackle as a group? (image by Justin Bernhaut for Real Simple)

Holiday Décor: When do you start decorating?
Posted on Nov 18, 2009 8:30:00 AM  |  By Nykia Spradley

I came home last week to a nice surprise. There were two small plants at the top of my stoop covered in festive red bows. It had my mom's name written all over it. She'd come over while I was at work and set them up. I was the perfect starting point to my holiday decorating. Usually I'm scrambling a week or two before Christmas to pull it all together, but this year I have been determined to get an earlier start. Even though it was two week before Thanksgiving, my mom's gesture was the perfect push toward an early holiday high. While Christmas is more than a month away, and my house, so far, is the only one in the Christmas spirit, I loved seeing the early signs of what's to come. Just this week white lights were placed on the trees outside of my office building and the...

Planning for an Organized and Stress-Free Thanksgiving
Posted on Nov 17, 2009 2:03:36 PM  |  By ErinDoland

With Thanksgiving next Thursday, it's time to start thinking about getting things organized for the holiday. Pull out your cookbooks, grab a sheet of paper and a pen, and commence planning. Here's my plan of attack for the festivities:

Tuesday, Nov 17: Create a meal plan -- go through recipe books, choose menu, create a grocery list, and "shop" for supplies in pantry. Also, order a turkey from your favorite bbq joint so that you don't have to worry about waking up at the crack of dawn a week from Thursday.

Wednesday, Nov 18: Clear clutter from guest quarters and make sure there are clean sheets, towels, and supplies ready for people coming to stay with you.

Thursday, Nov 19: Clean out refrigerator and check expiration dates on food items in your pantry. Clear general clutter from kitchen.

Friday, Nov 20: Grocery shop (our local market is empty on Friday nights).

Wow, magical... and depending on where you live and your background, you may or may not celebrate Thanksgiving (here in Germany it is not recognized as a holiday) but all can still find inspiration from this gorgeous table just the same. I've included some gorgeous photos that Jennifer submitted, I'm sure that you'll love...

Uncluttered Speaking
Posted on Nov 12, 2009 2:01:46 PM  |  By ErinDoland

The other night, a friend of mine from out of town and I were trying to decide where to go for dinner. The conversation went something like --

Him: I'm still a vegetarian, so let's not go to a steak house.

Me: Not a problem. I suggest Restaurants A, B, and C. Restaurant A is a family owned Thai restaurant that makes you feel like you're in someone's home, Restaurant B is a local chain that serves a solid American menu, and Restaurant C is an Ethiopian restaurant that is possibly the best Ethiopian food you can get in the US.

Him: All sound great, which do you prefer?

Me: I think we should go to Restaurant A. It will be easier for us to have a conversation in there.

Him: I like that if I ask, you will share your opinion. You get to the point. You're straightforward.

Since our conversation, I've been thinking a lot about the word "straightforward." It implies a level of practicality and directness without being rude or controlling. It also means that I'm not cluttering up my speech -- or at least that is the positive spin I'm putting on it.

Being straightforward means you don't get involved in office politics or gossip because these behaviors clutter up your time. It means that you state your opinion when you have one and when someone else asks to hear it. You tell it like it is, but without being obnoxious. You ask for what you want and don't expect someone else to read your mind.

Decor Ideas from T.V. Shows
Posted on Nov 11, 2009 3:45:00 PM  |  By KristinAppenbrink

I'm always looking for insipiration and ideas related to home decor. And recently, I've been paying more attention to the decor in T.V. shows and movies. You can find pretty much any style of decor imaginable, and cull some great designs from them. If you're following recent shows, you might even be able to find the exact (or incredibly similar at the very least) products that the set designers used on the show. My favorite example of this is from the new comedy Modern Family (which is hilarious, by the way). I fell in love with the lamp that is in Cameron and Mitchell's home shown here: And I'm clearly not the only one who loves it. CasaSugar did a round up of similar lamps. Although they didn't find the exact one shown. I think the closest I've found is the Kathryn Table Lamp from Crate & Barrel: If you...

Building an Emergency Survival Kit
Posted on Nov 10, 2009 11:06:04 AM  |  By ErinDoland

In my home, we have a lot of kits. Like many people, we have an emergency medical kit that includes Band-aids, a thermometer, and traditional first-aid supplies. We also have a picnic kit (a wedding gift that has turned out to be much more useful than I ever imagined), a camera kit, a cleaning kit, a tool kit, and a sewing kit. I'm sure if I scoured the house I'd find a few more kits, too. Kits are convenient, typically cost less than if you purchased the same items individually, and are easy to store.

I recently learned about a company named Disaster Necessities that makes 72-hour emergency supply kits. There are food kits, professional kits, car kits, and medical kits. They even have survival kits for dogs. According to the website:

Government and Relief Agencies estimate that after a major disaster, it could take up to three days (72 Hours) for relief workers to reach some areas.

Way Basics: Easy to Build Modular Furniture
Posted on Nov 9, 2009 5:43:16 PM  |  By KristinAppenbrink

By now I've become a pro at putting together Ikea furniture. Give me a rubber mallet and a Phillips screwdriver for the cams, and I'm good to go. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't welcome an easier way to assemble the furniture in my apartment. Thankfully, Way Basics, a California-based company, has figured out a way to make some very Expedit-esque furniture that you literally just stick together. Check out their video on how to put together the basic cube: The boards used as the basis for the way basics system are made from recycled cardboard that's just as strong as the particle board you'd get from Ikea and other retailers, but much more eco-friendly. And because the boards are held together with really strong double-sided tape you are free to assemble them in any configuration you choose. For example, here is the basic Tribeca Bookcase: And here is another...

I've been living in Germany now for three months, so I'm finally starting to miss things from my homeland. I was told that expats start to miss certain things after about three months so I guess the rumors were true. So far, I miss only a few things like cupcakes (which I guess is better for my diet to not have them nearby), American wedding cakes (I love buying one each year on my anniversary with the decadent roses - so kitschy but I love the super sweet buttercream frosting), Barnes & Noble, Target (mostly for Method cleaning supplies), certain boutiques I loved back home and West Elm....

  2. Avoid surprises. Confirm vacation days with your HR department.
  3. Know what to expect. Check Traffic.com, Flightstats.com, and Weather.com before traveling.
  4. Give gifts you don’t need to wrap and/or ship. Try zoo and museum memberships, items from Etsy.com, spa or credit-card gift cards, or dance lessons.
  5. Skip the cooking. Order a smoked turkey from your favorite barbecue joint.

Photographer Bob O'Connor
Posted on Oct 30, 2009 8:39:19 AM  |  By HollyBecker

I was reading Jenn Ski's blog recently, she's an artist living in New Hampshire, and discovered the photography of Boston photographer Bob O'Connor. He shot her beautiful mid century modern home for, I'm guessing, a magazine or book and I thought I'd share some of the photos with you today. So many love the mid century style and enjoy bringing it into this century in a fresh, modern way and I think Jenn does this so well and I appreciate that she decorates on a budget. Mixing in products from stores like Room & Board and sites like Craigslist for used finds, she is transforming her home into a space that reflects her personal style. This 27-year-old artist has a great eye and her living room below is extremely well-edited example of that -- the colors and patterns are beautiful against such a natural background. The open floor plan and large floor to ceiling windows doesn't hurt either.

The following is an excerpt from my book Unclutter Your Life in One Week, which comes out next week on November 3. This is from the Wednesday chapter, the "Your Bedroom and Commute" section:

"Clear your bedroom of anything that doesn't promote sleep. Your floors, dresser tops, and nightstands should be free of all clutter. Nothing should be on your bed except for sheets, blankets, and pillows. Artwork and decor elements should be calming. Clothes, jewelry, and shoes need to be stored in their proper places. And, by all means, don't have a television or a computer in your bedroom. Televisions and computers stimulate your mind and have nothing to do with sleep. This room is your sanctuary and your retreat from the demands of the world.

Makeover Madness
Posted on Oct 22, 2009 4:03:20 PM  |  By KateParker

The past few weeks in my world have been filled with clutter-clearing, sorting, organizing, and building a ridiculous amount of Ikea furniture. I've barely had a minute to breathe, let alone blog! No, I didn't move. I've been working on a very fun home makeover series with CBS The Early Show on behalf of Real Simple, called Early Gets Organized, and it aired this week on CBS.

We spent the previous 2 weeks working on the actual makeovers - each room was re-done in less than 24 hours - insane! I had such fun creating the plans and choosing products for the new spaces. We worked at a frantic pace (with nary a handyman in sight), and I almost can't believe the clips when I watch them. Such dramatic before-and-afters! We re-did a closet, a kitchen, a home office, and a kids room - all with the goal of making life easier by creating streamlined systems, de-cluttering, and decorating on a budget.

See for yourself below...clips from 3 of the 4 makeovers...

Starting at the Bottom
Posted on Oct 22, 2009 3:14:50 PM  |  By ErinDoland

I have decided that the woman at the gym I wrote about on Tuesday is Yoda. Or a muse. Or some kind of guide to my current life.

Today, I was on this machine that helps with chin ups by counter balancing by weight somehow. I don't know the official name of it or how it exactly works, but I'll call it the Gravitron 3000 for the remainder of this article. I'm on the Gravitron 3000 and I'm barely making it through 40 chin ups with only 50 lbs. As I'm cursing to myself and trying to be positive, I see the woman across the gym who gave me advice on Tuesday.

Like me, the woman is doing chin ups, but she's doing them on a plain, metal bar without the help of the Gravitron 3000 and she's doing them with a 25 lb weight chained to her waist.

She is lifting her entire body and 25 more pounds.

How to Make A Bed
Posted on Oct 22, 2009 8:30:00 AM  |  By Nykia Spradley

There is no question, no matter hectic your life, the one room in your home where you should always be able to escape, is the bedroom. For the past few months I've felt like my bedroom isn't quite there yet. I've been working on filling in the gaps (window treatments, new lighting, accessories) to make it cozy and relaxing. I think a big part of the less than heavenly feel that it currently has is the daunting task of making the bed in the morning. The funny thing is, before I was married I religiously made my bed. Maybe it was because it was smaller room (which meant less work), plus I didn't have all of the components (duvet, shams, toss pillows) to pile on each morning. I started thinking about it and realized that I don't quite know how to make a "designers" bed. I would love to make...

While at the gym today, I grumbled to my spotter that I can't believe how weak I am and that I didn't know how many more reps I could do in my set. A woman doing bicep curls next to me waited for me to finish and then spoke up and told me the following:

New Pillows to Go with this Duvet
Posted on Oct 14, 2009 2:35:00 PM  |  By KristinAppenbrink

A couple weekends ago I bought a new duvet cover for the first time in about five years. My current one saw me through my apartment in college and my move to New York. It was also one that I had made myself. So needless to say, it was time to upgrade. After a lot of contemplation, I decided on the Organic Cotton Pin-Tuck Duvet and Shams in Sea Spray from West Elm, which is a really pretty light grey. But now that I have my duvet and shams, I'm not sure what to do about the throw pillows on my bed. I already have three 12in x 12in down pillows with removable shams. So I would ideally, just like to find (or make) new covers. I'm afraid if I did a pattern it would look strange with with the pintuck texture. Therefore, I'm thinking of doing textures in one...

Taking Ownership of Busy-ness
Posted on Oct 13, 2009 3:20:29 PM  |  By ErinDoland

Danielle LaPorte, author of the blog White Hot Truth, recently wrote the article "We know you're busy. Now shut up about it." My favorite paragraph:

Whatever is on your plate got there because you said yes to it -- in the fullness of ambition and desire and wanting to eat life whole. Sometimes we take on to-do's and commit to climb mountains because our soul demands it. Sometimes life throttles us with unforeseen and unrelenting demands. Sometimes busyness is the result of keeping up with the Joneses. Busy can be good. Busy can be bad. Busy is most often a choice.

Do you ever read something and wish that you had written it? This paragraph is one of those for me. I've never been able to express this thought -- one that I agree with fully -- with such clarity, passion, and attitude.

I try not to complain about being busy because I love the reasons my time is filled with things to do -- I love my job and writing, I love my husband and our son, and I love that I have a book coming out next month. I'm not perfect (I've definitely grumbled a lot lately about missing my normal sleep schedule), but I try my best to keep from whining about all of the things I have to do. I like to remind myself that I get to do these things. I am fortunate to have the freedom to make these choices for my time.

The Laptopper. Brilliant or Dangerous?
Posted on Oct 12, 2009 5:30:00 PM  |  By KristinAppenbrink

This isn't home related per se, but when I came across this unitasker, I had to share it with you. Behold the Laptopper from Solutions.com: I've taken plenty of car trips in my time. And I would eat behind the wheel during the 3 hour drive between my parents' house and my apartment in college. But I never really felt the need for a desk or table to go over my steering wheel. In fact I think driving with this would be quite dangerous. I'm guessing that the manufacturers don't intend for you to use this while driving, but I didn't find any warning of it on the website. Am I being too much of a worrier? Is this a brilliant idea? Or do you think this could be a recipe for disaster? (image from solutions.com)

Five Steps to Organizing Your Bathroom Cabinet

  3. Sort by type and user. On a table, sort your like goods with like goods. Then, group together all person-specific items.
  4. Store groups into purpose bins. If you brush your teeth, wash your face, and then take out your contacts every night before bed, these groups of items should be stored together in a tray or bin inside your cabinet. This way, you pull out all the items at once and put them back into the cabinet at once.
  5. Store items based on frequency of use. Finally, the items you use the most often should be in the most convenient locations.

Posted on Oct 7, 2009 8:23:46 AM  |  By HollyBecker

Yesterday I came across the sweetest white resin dachshund bookends while browsing the Barnes & Noble website and loved them so much that I purchased them right away. Aren't these cute? They are designed for Barnes & Noble by designer/ceramicist Jonathan Adler and are under $40. Wouldn't they make for a great addition to your office or as a housewarming...

Hide Temporary Chaos with a Room Divider
Posted on Oct 6, 2009 10:59:01 AM  |  By ErinDoland

Unexpected guests can be a wonderful surprise, but they can also come into your space at inopportune times. Even the most organized and decluttered homes experience moments of disorder when going through day-to-day life.

Being able to temporarily hide this chaos can help to keep your sanity and let you focus on your guests instead of worrying about your mess. I recommend owning a portable room screen that you can set up in front of your desk, craft room, or child's play area to close off the area from view.

Umbrella Prints: Textiles
Posted on Oct 5, 2009 6:38:55 AM  |  By HollyBecker

It's been awhile since I checked out what the girls over at Umbrella Prints have been up to, but one look at Irene's blog this week, Bloesem, and I was reminded of what I've been missing. The talented Amy Prior and Carly Schwerdt, Australian fabric designers, have been hard at work creating all sorts of lovely patterns and colors resulting in some pretty nice handmade screen-printed textiles that I'd like to get my hands on.See for yourself...

A penny! Starting with our November issue (which should be headed your way in just a few short weeks), our Simple Solutions team will be coming up with a slew of new uses for one item that you have around your house in abundance. And each month a few lucky readers will have their new use published as well. So every so often we'll be asking for ideas from you. And for an upcoming issue, we're looking for new ways to use a penny. Just an average run-of-the mill red cent. Submit your uses here. And if you have suggestions for household items you'd love to see new uses for, leave them in the comments below. (image from The United States Mint)

High vs. Low Decor on Shelterpop
Posted on Sep 30, 2009 2:15:00 PM  |  By KristinAppenbrink

Do you read Shelterpop? It's a great home design site as part of the AOL Living segment. (Full disclosure, AOL and Real Simple have the same parent company, but that's not what motivated this post.) In browsing their site this week, and catching up on what I'd missed as I've been putting more time in on the print version of Real Simple, I decided that I think my favorite column of the site is the High vs. Low column. While I might aspire to have a fantastic apartment out of the pages of Real Simple, the late great Domino, or the Design Within Reach or Anthropologie catalogs, truth is I'm working on a limited budget. So their finds of designer-esque goods at far from designer prices, are incredibly helpful. Here are two of my recent favorites: I would love to have a leaning floor mirror in my space. And buying...

Favorite Things - What Are Yours?
Posted on Sep 30, 2009 6:39:59 AM  |  By HollyBecker

When I relocated to Germany last month, I asked some of my favorite people to hop on my blog, decor8, for a few weeks and share a few of their favorite things. If you'd like to view these posts, please click here. I was surprised and amazed by their picks - surprised because I guess I didn't expect some of the favorites they highlighted and amazed in that each contributor attached so much sentimental value to their chosen items. When it comes right down to it, it appears as though our favorite things are always the ones that cannot be easily replaced (or replaced at all), doesn't it? Wouldn't this be a great idea for a magazine column by the way?

Tips for ditching kitchen clutter
Posted on Sep 29, 2009 8:15:00 AM  |  By ErinDoland

Reader Sylvia e-mailed in a terrific set of tips for identifying and curbing clutter in the kitchen:

I found an easy method that made uncluttering my kitchen a snap this weekend. I opened up each drawer or cupboard one by one and asked myself: "What do I reach for?" I then removed the items I consistently reach for from the space. The items left in the drawer fell into several categories:

  • not in its proper home
  • broken or did not work well
  • multiple (I had 6 slotted spoons!)
  • never used (probably a unitasker).

Removing the items I use allowed me to honestly take a look at what was left, and I had much less attachment to the items knowing that everything I need was already set aside.

Secret Relief
Posted on Sep 24, 2009 8:15:00 AM  |  By ErinDoland

Reader Kim recently sent me an e-mail discussing her method for how she decides what things are clutter and what she chooses to keep:

My question is: If this item was lost in a fire or flood or was broken by someone else (lost in a way that was out of my control), would I feel grief -- or secret relief? This question, in the way I ask it, helps me recognize items that I may be keeping out of guilt or fear (or even habit) rather than love or actual usefulness.

I think this is an excellent method to use when going through the uncluttering process. I especially like the phrase "secret relief" in her question.

In my life, it's not often that I come across objects that I think about their dismissal as a secret relief, but I feel it a great deal when it comes to obligations and actions on my to-do list. I dream about how nice it would be if I could gracefully bow out of things and not feel any guilt about it.
