The Cookie Recipe that Caused Quite a Commotion
Posted on Oct 9, 2009 2:15:00 PM  |  By KathleenHarris

I recently asked our Facebook fans to share their favorite Real Simple cookie recipe. However, the conversation took quite an interesting turn. Hillary D., the first respondent, shared her cookie secret: "Cake mix of choice...half can of sweetened condensed milk, three eggs and Voila! The perfect cookie dough!"

This simple recipe quickly elicited an amazing response: some questions (Can you roll them? What temperature do you cook them at?) and others spouted pure praise ("Hillary D. for president!"). Check out the entire discussion on Facebook.

To answer the call of the cookie wild, I reached out to Hillary asking her to provide us with her complete recipe. She graciously agreed--here it is (thank you, Hillary!):

Ingredients
Any flavor boxed cake mix, i.e. Red Velvet, Spice Cake, Vanilla, Devils Food, Strawberry...
3 eggs
1/2 - 3/4 can sweetened condensed milk

Steps
1. Preheat oven 350 degrees F.

2. Dump dry cake mix into bowl. Add three eggs; begin to mix with fork.

3. Add 1/2 can sweetened condensed milk; continue to mix.

Note: The mix should have a cookie dough consistency so if it is too dry, add a tablespoon (or more) only of the Sweentend Condensed milk at a time. You don't want to add too much. If you do happen to add too much, dont fret, just throw some flour in it.

The dough will have some residual powder cake mix, which is fine.

4. Take a tablespoonful at a time and roll into balls about the size of a golf ball (or however large or small you want your cookies). Roll the balls in sugar and place on ungreased cookie sheet (preferrably stone) and bake at 350 degrees F for 10-12 minutes or until they are the texture you want them (crunchy or chewy).

EXTRAS: More ways to try the cookies:

Take vanilla cake mix and add a softened block of cream cheese with the three eggs and less milk. Wonderful frosted with cream cheese frosting and topped with crushed peppermint!

If you want you could add any candy at all: M&M's, Hershey Kisses, Andes Mints, Chocolate Chips

We have also made ice cream sandwich cookies with them.

Have fun--this recipe is so versatile you will make more cookies than ever!

From Kathleen: Let us know if you try the recipe, I'd love to hear what you think! Oh, and if you do have a favorite Real Simple cookie recipe, please share it here.

Wow! So much for baking being an exact science requiring precise measurements. http://blog.sweetservices.com/sweetscandyblog/

Sounds yummy! I have another cake mix recipie that is just as easy!

1 Strawberry (or Chocolate) Cake Mix
1/2 cup oil
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup water
1/2 package chocolate chips

Mix first four ingredients together. Fold in Chocolate Chips. Drop onto cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes or until done. Do not let cookies brown.
