The Best College Food
Posted on Oct 12, 2009 4:35:00 PM  |  By KathleenHarris

Do you have fond memories of your college dining hall? What I remember most from my first meal at Northwestern was the cereal bar. I'm a total cereal junkie and loved having the freedom to create my own bowl of Cap'n Crunch, Lucky Charms, and granola (to be healthy, of course)...for dinner. Other than that, I don't particularly remember being wowed over by gourmet catering. But then again, things always improve after you graduate...or at least it always seems like that.

Still, Northwestern didn't make The Daily Beast's list of the country's top 15 colleges for food. Here's what did: schools with sushi bars, Maine lobster, and speciality chocolate drinks. Take a peek and see if your alma mater made the list.

Did your school have any of these delicious perks? What do you remember most about college food?

I loved that my Northwestern food card (whatever it was called) could be used in Allison's cafeteria OR it could be used for ice cream at Norris. I ate a lot of ice cream!

I loved the dining options at Texas Tech University when I was a student years ago. The Market and Sams Place were my favorites. I still crave those spicy chicken quesadillas from time to time.

I went to a University in the northeast known world-wide for their culinary arts program. When it came to dining on campus, the food offerings were subpar. The best option was a small hidden deli on campus where I could grab a quick sandwich and soup. You would think a University known for educating up and coming chefs that the food would be excellent. The other dining halls boasted the usual greasy mystery meat that many college students have had to deal with for ages. I attended in the late 90s/early 00s, things may have change since then.

I went to University of Michigan and the only thing that I miss about the food in the dorms was brunch. Waking up late and rolling out of bed to tons of eggs, a boatload of cereal choices, waffles, bacon, homefries, juices...yum...I still like making brunch but its not the same as getting everything you want without the work or the wait.

Back in the mid-to-late 80s, the Notre Dame dining halls were known for their specialty nights. I remember in particular dinner with a French theme, complete with a miniature Eiffel Tower outside the dining hall.

Dinners on the nights of home football games would consist of steak (not very tender, but still a nice try) and white tablecloths. They also did very respectable Easter and Thanksgiving dinners for students who could not travel home for the holidays.

Pepperoni Pizza and fries with Honey Mustard! Don't forget nights with Ben and Jerry's pints.

My favorite thing about the cafeteria was 10 cent cake. Every so often, they would have slices of 10 cent cake. YUM!

Oh my goodness. I remember late night dining hall food at UC Santa Cruz! French fries with nacho cheese! And fresh made waffles with ice cream and whipped cream! We had 5 dining halls to choose from and one had a milkshake maker and another had a crepe machine.

Whenever friends visited me at the U of Iowa they always told me our dorm food was so much better than any they'd had. I still think Iowa treated us well in the kitchen!

The only things I miss about college food are the facts that: 1. someone else planned/shopped for it; 2. someone else prepared it and 2. someone else cleaned up after the meal.

I'm from the midwest but went to school at Hollins University, in Roanoke, Va. The southern cooks used sweet potatoes in ways I'd never dreamed. My favorites were sweet potato burritos and sweet potato french fries!

I don't recall the food being either fantastic or terrible. It was generally edible, and it kept me from going hungry. What I loved about eating at the dining hall was that I didn't have to plan, cook or clean up after a meal! I miss that!

I'm a recent Drake University grad, and while I don't miss the majority of the food (except the Buffalo Chicken Wraps served every other Friday), I do miss the social aspect of eating at college: meeting up with my friends, coming up with plans for the weekend, and making fun of each others' food choices.

I was addicted to the belgian waffles that you could make at any meal of the day at Northwestern. Waffles for breakfast (never could make it to), lunch and dinner. Excessive amounts of margarine and powdered sugar...to be a teenager again!

Ahh, college food...at Oklahoma State, I don't remember much about the dorm food (I was probably always late) but I do remember the chocolate milk! It was the best I had ever tasted, only found out later that it was full of fat and sugar. The other great eats could be found late at night: cheese conies on the Strip, and beer and queso at The Spanish Landing. Needless to say someone gained a few lbs that year! Bar none best thing about college food?? The camaraderie!! How many girls could we fit around a table, because everyone was welcome, or how many could we cram into the tv corner for a little lunch and "All My Children"...those were the days!!

I went to Penn State, which had great food in the "cafs." My favorite was the potato bar, which included baked sweet potatoes and loads of healthy toppings like broccoli and cottage cheese. Years later, I still eat like I'm in college, but then, college food was pretty healthy so I suppose that's ok!

i went to a small liberal arts school in new hampshire and they used to make this thing called a "4 C's Bar" on certain days (I think Tues and Fri). It was a Chocolate-Chip Cheesecake bar and it attributed to my freshman 15 more than anything else they had (even the creme brulee which was also amazing).
