What Are Your Tried-and-True Home Remedies?
Posted on Oct 2, 2007 4:20:31 PM  |  By SimplyStatedAdmin

It starts with a tickle, a trickle, a sniffle, a sneeze. A mere 24 to 48 hours later, it has morphed into full-blown wretchedness: a sore throat, a pounding head, an up-all-night cough, a stuffed and leaky nose. Yes, it's that time of year again: cold and flu season.

Does your family have any tried-and-true home remedies to treat cold and flu symptoms? Share them with us by posting a comment, below.

At the very first sign of a cold or the flu, take a homeopathic remedy for colds and flu (I use Alpha CF by Boiron). Your cold/flu never materializes - it simply goes away. Continue taking the cold and flu remedy for 24 hours to ensure the cold/flu does not come back. I have not had the cold or flu for the past 35 years, since using homeopathic cold/flu remedies. I start taking the small, sugar pills (I put them under my tongue and let them dissolve so they reach the blood system immediately) when I first notice a sore throat coming on - which is my first indication of cold/flu coming. If I wait just 4-6 hours and don't start taking the homeopathic remedy, my cold will come on but will be less severe. It is most important to start taking the cold/flu remedy immediately, with the first indication you are coming down with something. My husband thought it was bunk, but then started using Alpha CF and has not had a cold for the last 15 years. Cynthia, RN.

For a sore throat, this works great. I've been using it for 2 years & haven't been to the doctor for a sore throat since I first tried treating sore throats using this. Take 1 tablespoon vinegar & mix with 6-8 ounces of water. Take a tablespoon of this mixture & gargle with it, spitting it out. Take another tablespoon of the mixture, gargle & swallow it. Every hour or so, take another tablespoon of the mixture, gargle & swallow. You should feel better within 24 hours, but if not continue for up to 48 hours (for strep throat). You really need to use an all natural, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (that you'd find at a health food store) for the best benefit. I use Bragg's apple cider vinegar.

Whenever we feel like we are starting to come down with a cold, we go to our Chiropractor and get adjusted to keep our body at 100%, double up on our multi-vitamins and vitamin C, take echinacea, drink lots of fluids like hot tea, water and juice, and get lots of rest. For a sore throat we gargle a few times a day with warm salt water. Try gargling with peroxide for a sore gum, infection in your mouth, or a non serious sore tooth. For headaches.....get Adjusted by a Chiropractor and keep yor body hydrated with lots of water.

Vicks Vapo Rub! Someone told me that if you put a layer of it on the soles of your feet when you have a tickle cough, then cover your feet with socks, it somehow travels up through your feet into your system and stops the cough for hours. I was skeptical, but when my two-year-old woke up in the middle of the night a few weeks ago and couldn't stop coughing, I tried everything else. Finally, in a last-ditch effort, I put Vicks on his feet and 5 minutes later he was sleeping soundly again and didn't wake up again the rest of the night. I was so impressed I tried in on myself a few days later when I caught his cold. Worked again! It's great to have something like this to use with kids now that experts discourage the use of cough medicine.

My grandmother was a nurse for years and her favorite cold remedy was smothering your feet in Vapor Rub, putting on your socks and going to bed. It certainly was not a cure, but my head and sinuses always felt better in the morning. These days, I rely on my Cold FX to knock a cold or flu out of my body before it sets in and I'm a huge believer in it.

As for home remedies for things other than colds: I know that holding a warm, wet tea bag over your eyelid will ease the pain of a sty, vinegar takes the sting out of a sunburn and lessens the chance of peeling, and peanut butter will alway chase away hiccups.

To help a sore throat or chest congestion, moisten a tube sock and warm it in the microwave. Spread Vicks in it and wrap around your neck. Relief in no time.

Rest! Don't push through your misery and be a martyr! The best way to get better is to rest up and take care of yourself

An infected small cut (hangnail ect), will be soaked in a big bowl of warm water with 3 tablespoons of household bleach. The cut will then heal like magic! Works every time!

As soon as a cold kicks in, I take Cold-EEZE zinc lozenges (strawberries & cream is my favorite). They help lessen the severity of my symptoms and cut the time in half -- my last cold only lasted three days.

Do not go to bed sucking on a cough drop. If you wake coughing do not reach for the cough drops. You will reward your dentist with cavities and he will bill you. Even sugarless cough drops will create bacteria just like the rest. Brush before bed with a smile.

When you get the slightest sore throat. It is usua;;y a sign of a cold. Take the time to stop and put 5 drops of hydrogen peroxide in the ear on the side that your throat hurts. Lie down so the solution does not runout. Leave it 10 min. It will bubble and tickle in your ear. Leave it and
after 10 min let it drain out. Then treat the other side the same way. It stops a cold for me everytime. Timing is important so treat your ears at the first sign of a throat trouble.

My mom always said "take a hot shower, you'll feel better no matter what."
