When Is it OK to Take a Parenting Shortcut?

How bad is it if you let your toddler eat Cheerios off the floor? Or skimp on babyproofing the house? As long as you're tending to the really important things, the tiny shortcuts can't make much of an impact. Or can they?

What concerns do you have about these questionable scenarios? What advice can you share with other parents? Let us know by posting a comment, below.

I let go of the "Don't let them eat food off the floor" thing a long time ago. I don't encourage it by any means, but I have a two-year-old boy. He's fast. He's messy. He loves food. It was inevitable.

A little dirt will not hurt a child. Some research suggests that a large majority of children have developed allergies due in large part to how sterile our homes have become. Not babyproofing the house requires that you be diligent, but children survived for centuries around open fireplaces, boiling water, and around fragile objects. Paying attention to your child and what they are "getting into" is important - distracted parents will miss the REAL safety issues.
