When was the last time you moved a plastic game piece around a board (red, please) or sang somewhere besides the shower? Playing isn’t just for kids or professional athletes. In fact, playing is good for your brain (not to mention your social life). Plus, it’s fun! How do you relax through play? Tell us your story by posting a comment, below.
Posted by: becky o'keefe| October 01, 2007 at 03:52 PM My boyfriend and I used to host game nights in our apartment all the time. But, last year we bought a house. And, decided that the yard shouldn't go to waste. So, we've been organizing tournaments with about 25 friends. We play three games from a variety of them. Charades, Cornhole, Ladder Golf, Euchre, Bunco, and other board and card games. Everyone gets put into a team and you move around to different stations throughout the day. Everyone puts in a little money and we pay out the top 4 teams. We've even gotten our neighbors involved and everyone is constantly asking us when the next one is..... The ultimate girls' game night....Bunco! Ten years ago we started a group in my Virgina neighborhood. Twelve women getting together monthly for the easy dice game, wine, food, catching up, and fun! We didn't all know each other well when it started, but we came to. When I moved to Summerville, SC two years ago, I knew how much I would miss our Bunco nights, so the first thing I did was formed a Bunco group on my new street. We were all new to the are so it was a great way to make friends quickly. My husband commented that the guys never have this much fun on poker night! A group of friends--couples, singles, children, and pets--who share interests in education, music, and home improvement started the Martini Makers club. We try to get together about every month or six weeks throughout the school year, and people take turns hosting. We got the group started by asking each person to bring a drink recipe, the necessary ingredients, and an hors d'ouevre or munchies to share. We quickly accumulated many martini recipes and two boxes of drink ingredients. But it's not about the drinks--it's about the friendships. We share experiences, play Farkel (a dice game), and sometimes laugh ourselves to tears. As one person married and moved to Florida, and two others accepted new out-of-state positions in Montana and Alaska, our close-knit group of friends commited to annual Martini Makers gatherings to stay connected. A good friend of mine (Sharon) and I started a Game/Book/Wine Club to keep up friendships of other Moms from our elementary school. Our group of about 25 Moms meets once a month on Thurs. evening and we hope to stay together through high school. We share great book reads but we don't formally sit down and discuss the books. We have games nights every other month which have included: annual Texas Hold 'em and Ping Pong tournaments, dominoes, pictionary, annual regifting party after Christmas, Karaoke and Dance, Dance, Revolution just to name a few. |

As the parents of teenagers we are used to watching our children play sports, but last summer one of the moms got a group together to play kickball in a Friday night rec. league. We are all in our 40's and 50's and somtimes take quite a beating from teams decades younger that us, but we've never had so much fun in our lives! We've had our share of pulled muscles and one of our players is being treated for melanoma this season, but he comes to every game to keep score and cheer us on. It's great for the kids to see the parents acting like kids too!
