What nuggets of fashion wisdom did your mother offer over the years while she got dressed and you played with her makeup? Share her tips by posting a comment, below.
Posted by: Ashley| January 24, 2008 at 02:27 PM ALWAYS weargood clean under garments - you never know when you will have an accident and someone will see them! I have been in a car accident and she couldn't have been more right. Thanks Mom! Mom always said to never sacrafice fit for a name. Just because it's name brand, doesn't mean it's the best fit for your body, find something that works for YOU and you will make the outfit, no matter what brand it is. Wear winter boots! This saves all of work shoes from the salt damage. I'm able to keep these shoes much longer than they would have lasted. Also, I have warm toes and cute boots! Buy quality, not quantity, stick with traditional, not trendy and stand up straight. Always make sure that you don't stop with your foundation at your chin line. Blend it so that you don't have a definate line. Something so simple that many people don't do. She told me that personality goes a long way; there will always be someone with cuter shoes or a more stylish dress. But, no one will wear anything like you do ... you just have to own it and then strut your stuff. The best accessorie is a thin waist We were never wealthy. My mother taught me to buy quality pieces with classic lines that never go out of style. She taught me how to buy on sale to make each dollar count, and how to buy pieces that all interchange to maximize suitcase space when traveling. I continue to take her advice today, and I am trying to teach my children these same shopping skills. With luck and some savvy shoppers knowlege, you can look sharp and still have sojme money to spend on fun! Stand up Straight, put your shoulders back. Everything looks so much better on you that way! If you can't walk in heels without looking like you're plowing a field, don't wear them. I never once heard my mother say she felt ugly or fat. I never heard her utter the words "diet". I never heard so much as a comment about clothes. I never got a single fashion tip from my mother. In our house, the only thing that was ever in style was books. I may still be completely baffled by what to wear, but the kind of advice I got is trend-proof. When deciding which is more appropriate, pants or a skirt (or dress) this was her advice which has stood the test of time - when in doubt, wear a dress! After I had tried on every item in my closet trying to create the perfect outfit for a date, party or interview my mom would always come in to my room and tell me to pick out an outfit I already knew looked good on me and just add some new accessories. To this day when ever I feel myself getting the "what am I going to wear" blues I think of her adivce. And you know what? She's always right. My mom's fashion wisdom was to wear a white blouse. She said you will always look dressed up & your date won't take his eyes off of you, My mom's fashion wisdom was to wear a white blouse. She said you will always look dressed up & your date won't take his eyes off of you, ALWAYS wear clean underwear! My mother is a seamstress. She was always thinking and talking about how a piece was made, which I often had to listen to. But it's made me more aware of the shapes and styles of clothing, and how well (or not well) they fit certain body types. It makes it easy to avoid cute clothes I love but I know won't fit my body type and to figure out what accentuates my assets but still hides my flaws. My mom has always said to find & wear what compliments you and your figure best. Go for classic styles that will never go out. The best fashion advice my mother gave me was to buy clothes that have a multi-purpose. Whether it goes with everything in your closet or can be worn to work and to play. To this day I can buy one article of clothing and make several different outfits. The trick is to buy pants or skirts in all colors and the tops will match add accessories and you are ready to go. Mom was a clothes designer. As she made clothes for me she showed me that the best was inside. She showed me how seams should meet. How button holes should be evenly sewn. There should be no lose threads hanging anywhere. On the outside: how the cut of the dress (suit or coat) must contour to your contours. Stripes must run vertically. Never try to skimp on clothes. Perfectly made clothes could last forever. Mom was a clothes designer. As she made clothes for me she showed me that the best was inside. She showed me how seams should meet. Mom always says that if you find something that you love, buy it in multiples (especially if it's on sale!) I always stock-up on essentials, like t-shirts and bras, when I find a brand and fit that I truly love. Stick with the classic, tailored look. It never goes out of style. Consider your clothes an investment. Don't buy what you look okay in, buy what you look great in so you don't waste that investment. My mom said spend money on the shoes you wear a lot, and don't spend much on the shoes that only match that one outfit. |

It's better to be over-dressed than under-dressed.
