Destination Details
Posted on Oct 16, 2008 11:19:09 AM  |  By The Blogsmaid

With the cold weather settling in, my thoughts have been turning more tropical. I thought it would be cool to showcase some great destination wedding details that have been popping up. One of the hardest parts about destination weddings, especially in the Caribbean, is that often flowers we love to use state side are quite pricey there. So I loved this very clean, contemporary centerpece idea from Beach Theme Weddings. It utilizes lanterns and palm leaves, which I thought could also make a great theme for a tropical or beach locale. I thought this Aloha invitation from CECI White Label (the ready to order line from CECI) was chic and fun way to give your guests the details for your day. As any of you who are planning destination wedding days know, there is usually a ton of info to convey to guests, so I'm into the pocket insert. Sometimes,...

A DIY Guestbook
Posted on Oct 14, 2008 2:11:43 PM  |  By The Blogsmaid

I've written about photo guest books before, but I thought I'd offer up a couple of other ideas that I've seen around the wedding circuit that are fun, and personal. A lot of the time people never look at their guest book again, so I love the idea of using a hardcover coffee table book and having your guests go wild with a Sharpe. Find a book related to your shared the theme, like this LOVE book via Polka Dot Bride, interests, or the location (like this one from Wedding Junkie.) Find a book you really enjoy, because you'll want to visit it again and again. For those of you who are more DIY inclined, I adore the idea of a lyrical guestbook. I've made these for friends and clients alike, and, while time consuming, it's a ton of fun. Basically, take 1 plain Kolo album (or blank album of...

Group Transportation
Posted on Sep 30, 2008 12:58:08 PM  |  By The Blogsmaid

If you have a large wedding party you may have already discovered that short of a fleet of standard limos, or a music video worthy Hummer stretch, your options for getting your "troops" around town seem a little bit limited. I thought it might be worth while to post about some of the more interesting options for group transportation. These might be a little bit harder to find outside of major metro areas, but not impossible. I love vintage trolleys. Not only is one great for the wedding party (and parents, photogs, videographers, etc), but it can be a great way to shuttle guests to and fro as well. The trolley not only adds something special to photos, but it can often be more economic than a grand stretch SUV. For you California girl, what could be more unique than an old Woody- like in the surfer movies. These awesome...

What's in Your Emergency Kit?
Posted on Aug 19, 2008 9:48:55 AM  |  By The Blogsmaid

This past weekend I had a client's wedding, which meant it was time to haul out the big box: our MASTER wedding day readiness kit. (I don't really like using the term "Emergency Kit," it sounds so alarmist.) Since my job is to be prepared for many things, my kit is pretty serious, but it got me thinking about Readiness kits in general. You can buy an "Emergency Kit" online with a lot of the basics and some snazzy bridal packaging, or you can create your own kit with a trip to your local drug store. For some inspiration, here are some of the things in my kit: Pain relievers, antacid tablets, breath mints, sewing kit, blotting tissues, baby powder, chalk, clorox bleach pens, safety pins, bobby pins, hair ties, feminine hygiene products, toupee tape (it's amazing), double sided tape, ivory ribbon, white ribbon, floral pins, floral tape (for emergency...

Freaking About the Weather! Help!
Posted on Jul 23, 2008 10:51:14 AM  |  By LizKrieger

I know it's silly, and that there's NOTHING I can do about it, but I'm totally freaking about the weather for Saturday, my wedding day! Yes, the wedding is planned to take place outdoors. Yes, we can scuttle into the dance tent or the restaurant if necessary. No, that's not my first choice, as a big part of the loveliness of the location is the Hudson River views, the trees, the grounds, the patio where cocktails are 'sposed to take place! And yes, I know that it will be lovely no matter what...and yet, and yet, here I am, four days before the wedding, obsessively refreshing weather.com and accuweather.com for zip code 10567. (And yes, my fiancé, mother, friends and colleagues are surely already tired of this endless discussion.) So far the forecast calls for upper 80s, with scattered thunderstorms. Chance of rain 40%. The weather is notoriously hard to...

A Good Tip for Bridesmaids and Attendants!
Posted on Jul 17, 2008 5:00:00 AM  |  By LizKrieger

While my mom bought her wedding outfit several months ago and modeled it for me then, she hasn't pulled it off the hanger since then. But the other day a friend advised her to do a "dry run" with the whole look, and that was a wise choice. Problem: She realized that her bra strap was showing and needed to be tacked to the top. Solution: Special double-sided fabric tape to tack the strap to the shirt, i.e. Hollywood Fashion Tape. Another good option: Braza Strap Keepers. Problem: She took note of the fact that she'd shed a few pounds since she bought the pants, making them rather unattractively blousy in the rear and hips. Solution: A last-minute trip back to the tailor to have a few seams taken in. So, ladies (and gentlemen, too!) even if you don't think you need to, try on your dress, with the shoes...

Q: How Far Can Six Hours of Dance Lessons Get You?
Posted on Jul 9, 2008 5:00:00 AM  |  By LizKrieger

A: It depends on how bad you start out. In my case, when all is said and done, my fiancé and I will have had 5.5 hours of dance lessons. That's 330 minutes over six appointments, in which we have learned to...do the box step. Yes, that's it: one simple waltz! All that time, so that during the approximately two minutes we are alone on the dance floor, with all eyes on us, we'll be able to do something other than the old hug-and-sway. Obviously, we started out in a rather remedial state, since you'd think that with all that time (over six lessons) we'd have progressed to Dancing With the Stars-like moves. Not quite. So, was it worth it? Definitely—because during those 330 minutes we've had many laughs, a few sweet moments, and learned a small skill that (hopefully) we won't forget and can use at weddings for years...

How Planning a Wedding Is Like Having a Baby (Sorta)
Posted on Jul 7, 2008 4:34:53 PM  |  By LizKrieger

Hi! I'm Liz—I normally blog about health and fitness over in Life & Soul, and my own wedding is just 19 days away. With Margit no longer "Nearly Wed" and now very happily, very newly-wed (and on her South American honeymoon!), I thought I'd pop in and offer another bride's perspective. And just this weekend it struck me that in some small ways, preparing for a wedding is like preparing to have a baby. You register for gifts, your eyes widen at the impending (and sometimes insane) cost of it all, you fantasize and freak out about the big day, you get in a few tussles with your guy over some silly decisions (i.e. invitation colors...nursery paint colors...)...and you pack a bag! Meaning: right around the end of the eighth or ninth month, most moms-to-be pack a suitcase full of things they'll need in the hospital (PJs, receiving blankets, lucky...

Last Remaining Ceremony Questions We Didn't Forsee
Posted on Jul 2, 2008 11:13:39 PM  |  By Margit

FOUR days to go! I think this is where the cranky bridezilla might enter the picture. Fiance and I keep getting random questions that we haven't "captured" (to use a particular corporate parlance) in our list of remaining wedding tasks and doo-dads. Here are a few: 1. From the band: "How do you want us to dress? Generally, clients most often ask us to wear black suits, shirts, and ties, but of course we can dress however you prefer." For about five full seconds I ponder numerous possibilities... khakis and pink polo shirts...bowler hats and suspenders...tie-dye t-shirts... Suits it is. 2. From a guest: "Do you mind if I wear a white dress?" 3. From our wedding coordinator at the restaurant: "Do yo know who will be making toasts?" Now how do you politely sleuth this one? "Dear guests, can you please let us know if you'll be making any...

Wedding Bloggers Unite!
Posted on Jun 16, 2008 7:15:32 PM  |  By Margit

You have nothing to lose but your...exclusivity? Brides.com, authors of Wedded Bits, threw a lovely luncheon for wedding bloggers today and invited the "bee all end all" of bloggers, including, yes, Bee from Wedding Bee , as well as bloggers from Always a Bridesmaid, It's a Jaime Thing, Brooklyn Bride, Eco-Chic Weddings, Perfect Bound, Wedding Dish, From I Will To I Do and yours truly. [The bloggers at lunch with designer Angel Sanchez] [Angel, his gorgeous gowns and Michelle Preli of Brides.com] [Anne Chertoff of iVillage, Angel, me and Mayra Castillo of AlwaysaBridesmaid ] [Angel and Emily Anderson of Eco-Chic Weddings] > [I like this because it looks like I'm saying something totally important.] They cast it as a "potluck lunch" and, no, they didn't make us bring our own covered dish. Instead they asked each of the bloggers to send along an "item or a blog post" to inspire...
