Cakes
Creative Cake Alternatives

Wedding Cakes aren't for everyone, but the truth is, I'm getting a little tired of cupcakes.  So why not think outside the box a bit?  I saw this amazing truffle cake on Snippet and Ink that was made by I Dream of Cake, and I find it just dreamy.

For those of you Francofiles out there, why not a Crocombouche?  The traditional French wedding dessert literally translates into Crush In Mouth and makes for a mouthwatering display.  Photo Courtesy Daniel Chin Photography.

But, truth be told, we have a slew of home grown treats right here in America that make for fun loving dessert displays. Like this Twinkie Cake from Laptop Bride, or this donut extravaganza from Cakella.

So, are any of you doing something unusual for your wedding cake?

Um the candy in the top pictures look yummy. Not so sure about the pile of greasy donuts - nice touch with the Bride & Groom donuts on top though... :-)

We had a beautiful wedding, shot by Darby Elizabeth Photography, this past fall that was just like this. The couple were not cake people and so in place of a cake they hosted a gelato bar! It was such a fun idea that the associated press spotlighted the idea. Plus it was really tasty!

We had a wedding cake just for ceremonial cutting reasons. I would have forgone the cake completely but my husband said it was bad luck not to have one. I am not sure where he got that idea but it didn't really matter to me so we puchased a small 2 tier cake. For our guests though since we got married at Christmas we had a dessert bar with christmas cookies, mini eclairs, mini key lime pies, ect. We also set up a coffee bar with hot chocolcate and egg nog.

Just recently I blogged about french macarons. They're lovely and you get get them to match your wedding colours. Will they overtake cupcakes? Time will tell.
BTW, love the Twinkie cake.

I am having friends and family make homemade pies in place of the traditional wedding cake. My fiance and I will still cut a separate cake for the cake feeding tradition, but I am trying to construct a tiered pie stand.....any suggestions??

We are doing pies instead of cake for our wedding. We both prefer pie to cake, so we decided to ditch tradition. Since it's a fall wedding, we are going with "fall" pies- apple, pumpkin and pecan. We are going to cut into the pie and are using a buffet server (can find at bed bath and beyond) or using stands from the bakery.

Although I'm a huge fan of the wedding cupcake, I LOVE the Twinkie cake! Who doesn't love Twinkies???? And it's pretty, too!
