Gown
Punk, Rock and Roll
Posted on Oct 30, 2008 2:40:17 PM  |  By The Blogsmaid

I've noticed lately that the "Anti-Bride" movement has really been growing in popularity. The gowns have gotten funkier, a lot less poofy and the accessories are much more fashion forward. This spirit is embodied in a new line of bridal attire called, fittingly, Punk Rock Bride. Designed by RISD graduate Stephanie Ward for the bride looking for something untraditional, but well crafted. These dresses definitely fit the bill. But there is also a timeless quality about a bride wearing a Ballgown with a Cathedral Length train. I equally love these grand gowns Austin Scarlett designed for Kenneth Poole. So, which kind of bride are you? More Punk or more Princess?

Beauty
Wedding Feet
Posted on Oct 28, 2008 12:16:05 PM  |  By The Blogsmaid

A few weeks ago, while at a wedding, I saw a gaggle of bridesmaids surrounding our dear bride, surrounding a circle of visibly uncomfortable strappy sandals. Buying shoes for your wedding ensemble or bridesmaids' dress is a fun, exciting and sometimes whirlwind experience: you fall in love, you act impulsively, you worry about the consequences later. But uncomfortable wedding shoes can take their toll on a lady during a long wedding day. Some wedding shoe tips: * Chunky Helps: The chunkier the heel, the longer the wear. Same with rounded toes. Nothing beats a sexy stiletto, but if you can "make it work", all the better for your back! * Break-in: Everyone says this, but so few people do it. Wear your shoes around the house for at least an hour or two a day for the last couple of weeks before the wedding. * Sticky soles! Dr. Scholl's makes...

Hen's Night Alternatives
Posted on Oct 23, 2008 12:16:56 PM  |  By The Blogsmaid

If the thought of your bachelorette involving a night in a stretch limo and a stop at Chippendale's makes your skin crawl, why not throw some hints to your 'maids about these intriguing alternatives: Mobile Spa can come to your hostesses' home, a hotel or your location of choice while you sip champagne, gossip and remember your single days. Speaking of sipping champagne: It may be the wine drinking elite in me, but I just love the idea of a Wine Tasting party. Swirl Events can design a wine tasting around a theme, like women-owned vineyards, for instance. They can then come to your location, handle the set up, the pouring and dole out tons of useful information you can gab about. Just because you might not want to spend the night bar-hopping, doesn't mean you can't do something racy. Why not hint to your MOH that you'd always wanted...

Cakes
Great Groomscakes
Posted on Oct 21, 2008 1:07:42 PM  |  By The Blogsmaid

I love a groom's cake. While it's been a strong tradition in the South, I've been seeing them more and more frequently as a nod or homage to something the groom loves without worrying about it "fitting in" with the bride's decor scheme. (Most of us will remember the bleeding armadillo cake from the "Blush and Bashful" wedding in Steel Magnolia's). Here are some of my favorites groom's cakes that I've seen lately. This blackberry cake via Confetti Cakes is hilarious. Go Green- I love this Dartmouth Hall from Edith Meyer (but would love it more if it were the Van Wickle Gates) and it's an easy idea to adapt to your hubby's alma mater. Edith Meyer also created this Raider cake. In the olden days, legend had it that if a woman slept with a piece of the groom's cake under her pillow, she would dream of her future...

Destination Details
Posted on Oct 16, 2008 11:19:09 AM  |  By The Blogsmaid

With the cold weather settling in, my thoughts have been turning more tropical. I thought it would be cool to showcase some great destination wedding details that have been popping up. One of the hardest parts about destination weddings, especially in the Caribbean, is that often flowers we love to use state side are quite pricey there. So I loved this very clean, contemporary centerpece idea from Beach Theme Weddings. It utilizes lanterns and palm leaves, which I thought could also make a great theme for a tropical or beach locale. I thought this Aloha invitation from CECI White Label (the ready to order line from CECI) was chic and fun way to give your guests the details for your day. As any of you who are planning destination wedding days know, there is usually a ton of info to convey to guests, so I'm into the pocket insert. Sometimes,...

A DIY Guestbook
Posted on Oct 14, 2008 2:11:43 PM  |  By The Blogsmaid

I've written about photo guest books before, but I thought I'd offer up a couple of other ideas that I've seen around the wedding circuit that are fun, and personal. A lot of the time people never look at their guest book again, so I love the idea of using a hardcover coffee table book and having your guests go wild with a Sharpe. Find a book related to your shared the theme, like this LOVE book via Polka Dot Bride, interests, or the location (like this one from Wedding Junkie.) Find a book you really enjoy, because you'll want to visit it again and again. For those of you who are more DIY inclined, I adore the idea of a lyrical guestbook. I've made these for friends and clients alike, and, while time consuming, it's a ton of fun. Basically, take 1 plain Kolo album (or blank album of...

Invitations
Artfully Announced
Posted on Oct 9, 2008 9:17:59 AM  |  By The Blogsmaid

My first job out of college was selling rare posters. Random, I know, but it gave me a love of the graphic style that great posters have. So no surprise, I am WILD WILD WILD about these amazing, custom designed poster invitations from Unless Someone Like You via Etsy. They are artistic, archival and will last a lifetime and are only around $5, plus shipping. Not only are they unique- a poster invitation is a fabulous idea and ships well in a poster tube- but they are beautiful. I'm an art deco kind of girl, so I love Steven and Lucia's, but here are a variety of styles. Even if you can't wrap your head around the idea of sending a poster invitation, (I'll admit the planner in me is craving an rsvp card) they would make great save the dates or even just amazing decor accents to personalize your...

Where Gifts Go
Posted on Oct 7, 2008 9:49:23 AM  |  By The Blogsmaid

In the flurry of planning all your wedding details, a small detail like where your guests should place your gifts is easy to overlook. But, take it from me, it's REALLY a good idea to have a card box, bird cage or any other designated place for enveloped presents to go into. A gift table is all well and good, but a box of some sort is not only a great way to keep all your envelopes together, but its also a spot where you add some personal details/ tie your box into your overall "look". For this one couple, they loved all things vintage and used this antique suitcase as a card box, pinning photos and momentos of the couple to the top of the suitcase. For something a little bit more traditional, I thought this very subtle DIY box (from an excited bride) was really lovely. To dress...

Reception
A Lovely Place
Posted on Oct 2, 2008 10:32:21 AM  |  By The Blogsmaid

Escort cards are the sometimes last minute project of many a wedding. Sometimes brides and grooms are still making last minute seating changes right up until the day of the wedding, resulting in scratched out escort cards or white out over table assignments. One of my favorite ways around that dilemma is to use mini-envelopes and insert cards instead of just fold over cards. The guest name's are placed on the envelope and inside is a little card that has their table assignment. Not only can you color coordinate your envelopes and cards to your color scheme, as we see in this awesome display by Fleurs, but you can swap table numbers easily and take your time doing your seating with out the calligrapher breathing down your neck. Plus, the envelope flaps are ready made stands. Escort card displays are great places to make a style statement, no matter what...
