The Best Do-It-Yourself Wedding Photo Books
Posted on Jul 25, 2008 7:44:35 PM  |  By Margit

Now that the nuptials are over and I have scads of photos to sort through, I've been hunting for the best online do-it-yourself wedding photo books.

A few I've been perusing:

1. KodakGallery.com: I made a book from Kodak after my shower. Very easy and inexpensive, and most of my family uses this site so I have lots of shared images to pull from. Maybe not the fanciest out there but if you just want a simple book of your photos, this is a good bet. They're having a sale right now on photos books. $10 for pocket photo books; $30 for classic. Check it out.

2. Shutterfly: You can add text to the spine and lots of personalized notes throughout which is great.

3. Moo: The Manic Mommies over in our Technology department recommend this site for more unconventional photo products. I love the idea of post-wedding stickers on everyone's thank you cards.

4. Picaboo: Some of the loveliest books. All of these sites have demos of other people's books, weddings in particular. Picaboo, however, seems to allow you to to buy the sample? Weird. Would you really want to buy a book of someone else's wedding? Anyway...these are well-priced. For a 20-page booklet, the cost ranges from $9.99 for soft cover to $49.99 for a leather bound edition.

5. Apple: I pretty much love anything Apple, even though I remain a PC gal. So when the company sent me a very snazzy sample photo book created on a Mac I worried I couldn't do it since I don't have the iLife program. And, um, I can't. BUT one of the cool things is if you do have a mac you can really easily drag your photos in from iTunes or from iWeb. They make everything easy. You just need a Mac. Darn it.

Pretty though!

6. Blurb & Lulu: Sites recommended to me by our esteemed blog strategist Melissa Parrish. "Both really high quality," she adds. I love the red dust jacket in Blurb's example here.

Nearlywed Asks: Has anyone tried any of these services and would you recommend one over another?

Kodak now has an option to make a larger, leather book, and it has better page-layout options. For my wedding, I made the brown leather book, and it looks great. I think it was about $80 per book (I made one each for my husband + myself, his parents, and my parents). I am so happy with it.

I made a photobook from Shutterfly of things we did at the beginning of our relationship before we got engaged. It came out so well, and we love it. It is a hardcover book, like a storybook, so not super fancy. We will probably make another from our honeymoon.

It was an easy drag and drop method, and it was super simple to make changes. You can also upload all the photos you want to use at the beginning of the process, and then the site keeps track for you of ones that haven't been used yet - very helpful for not having one of those "oh, I forgot the picture of me and..." moments. The captions are a really nice way to add in info, and I liked the background options. From what I remember, they had categories you could pick, and then within the categories they had relevant backgrounds. I hunted around, though, and found some that I liked in different places other than my theme, so check out the other ones as well.

A friend of mine used Shutterfly to make a book of her bachelorette party. It was so great! We all loved passing around the book and laughing at all the goofy pictures.

It was pretty thin which, in my opinion, is a good thing. It takes up less space and is easier to store than a big bulky scrapbook. You could attach an envelope to the inside cover to hold any small keepsakes (like napkins, flower petals, etc) if you want to include those with you pictures.

Everyone thought it was so nice and she was so proud, she has now been deemed Photo Book Girl. She is in charge of taking all of our pics from girls nights and parties and putting them in one of these books. She said it was so easy, she didn't mind taking the job. Now we all get these great photo books of all our times together!

A site that I would definitely recommend is blurb.com. It is the same concept as apple but cheaper, more customizable, and you download the program and never have to get on the internet again until you are ready to order the book. It also has tons of template page layouts to choose from so you aren't wondering if those two squares are the same size. I studied photojournalism abroad in Italy last summer and that is the site our prof recommended using. The book I made turned out beautifully. My only complaint is that I went with a solid black background and i think it made some of my pictures look a little darker than they actually are. Hope this helps :)

I want to create hardcover photo books for "the parents" after the wedding, and want them to look really nice. I love the leather option and wanted to thank you for this post! The breakdown of all of the services was really helpful as well.

Check out MyPublisher.com. I did our wedding photo book for both sets of our parents here and I loved it! So easy to use and such wonderful options.

I got married last summer and because I bought my dress at David's Bridal I got a coupon code to get a free Shutterfly book. Although the final product was wonderful, the process was TERRIBLE!!! It took me such a long time because as I moved on to do the layout for the next page, the previous pages would not save! It was so frustrating, took lots of time, and several calls to Shutterfly. I wouldn't recommend them. I WOULD recommend Snapfish, though. I haven't gotten a book from them, but their pictures are great quality! When my sisters started having kids they each joined a different photo sharing site so I signed up for them all, ordered pics, and compared the quality. Snapfish is the best! AND once you join they e-mail you GREAT deals, like pics for $0.01 a few weeks ago! I got over $100 pictures for that great deal!
