Yes Lucy, I loved my dress. I brought two friends with me to witness my first gown fitting at Blue. We waited for a bit while a quartet of buzzy bridesmaids crammed into the tiny shop for their fittings. Christina Kara, the dressmaker, had me step into her size 6 heels (I didn't bring any, and I'm a size 10) and squeeze into a small bustier (yep, forgot that too) before draping two pieces of the dress around me. First the tulle underlay, then the cocktail-length duchess satin wrap. It has this cool, vintage-y collar, almost like Heidi Klum's Grammy dress meets Siri's "Vivian Leigh" dress. The length is what my mom just described as, "what we'd call ballerina length in the '50s." She added, "We'd have lots of poof underneath the skirt so the boys couldn't get too close." I'd show you the real deal but then my fiance...

If you're Demi Moore it might be a leeching treatment. This is just gross. She must be watching too much John Adams. Or was that blood letting? No matter, it's all gross. If you're me it might be starting a big new job while you're prepping for your nuptials (I was engaged in April, started here at Real Simple.com in October). What was I thinking?? Eh, I love it here -- it was all worth it. Here are a few crazy things we've heard about: Dying your hair to match the color scheme of your wedding. Getting a colonic to shed a quick 5 lbs. Having a back blackhead extraction. Ick. NearlyWed Asks: But what about you, fair bride? Done anything crazy lately? p.s. Trying on my dress for the first time tonight. Wish me luck!! --Margit Detweiler

We started with Stockholm. We added a dash of Copenhagen and a smidge of Barcelona. At first blush, it sounded like a well-rounded honeymoon that took into account my Scandinavian heritage investigation, his love for architecture and plenty of romance, wine and smorgasbords in between. And then we looked at the plummeting value of the dollar. Ack. Right now, one US dollar equals just .64 Euro. If we scaled back, would that make a difference? We spent a week retooling our trip into, simply, a Barcelona jaunt. But a friend who just returned from there warned, "you’ll be spending $15 on a glass of wine" – which, other than gawk at the Gaudi, is what you kinda want do on your Barcelona honeymoon. The next week I met with a travel agent who told me a cruise was the way to go. “You spend all your money upfront, your meals...

Every bride's worst nightmare. Well, that, and the groom standing you up, your dress not fitting, rain at an outdoor wedding and the ring bearer and flower girl getting into an all-out brawl. As I'm very under-the-weather today (sniffy, sneezy, fatigue, headache, you name it) I'm reminded of this fear. I just found some good tips on My Wedding Favors Blog that if an unavoidable illness happens, what you can do: "Red or puffy eyes–Get two small baggies and put a few ice cubes in them. Cover them with two fluffy washcloths and lay them over your eyes for 10 minutes. This will brighten your eyes up and reduce the puffiness by constricting the blood vessels. Red face–Apply a creamy bronzer. It counteracts the pinkness. Sore Throat–This tip comes from opera singers. Anything warm (not too hot!) and thin (like tea or broth) is good for relaxing the throat. You...

Pipe down alliteration police: I had to tell you about the NEW Friday favor round-up somehow, didn't I? Wedding Favors: one of those fun wedding non-essentials, but something that can add instant personality and make your day memorable. Our Real Simple Weddings editors made some fab suggestions in the Weddings Planner (page 147!) and here are a few more tips from Jaimee, Rachel (they sit right next to me, by the way. A bride couldn't be luckier.) and me: 1. The Mini Box of Chocolate Mmm...chocolate. You can't go wrong with a fancy, edible treat. Jaimee just handed me this elegant box from La Maison du Chocolate. I only show you the outside because I've already eaten the inside (two slivers of dark ganache with a hint of vanilla). Oops. You can place a card with a personalized message inside. 2. Handmade Seed Papers When my best friend got married...

On Sunday we bought our rings. It was just one of those things we did that day -- wedged somewhere between drinking morning coffee, buying rolls of paper towels, lugging cat food home, doing the dishes, watching Meet The Press, reading the New York Times, living our lives. It was freakishly uneventful. We went to the jeweler, knew what we wanted (we'd been in there three times already, trying on rings of various styles and price points. Yikes.) and just did it. The salesperson stared at us through her big round glasses and asked flatly, "Well, is that it?" Yes, that was it. He, my fiance, is it. And I think the matter-of-factness of the event speaks to how two rings symbolize something we're living every day. In a way, it's just a formality. Of course the engagement ring was a whole different story. Even though we'd talked about getting...

Well, no, not that ring. That would be a horror story. I'm looking for my post about shopping for wedding bands and the story of my engagement ring called "With This Ring." A little backstory: As loyal readers know, Nearly Wed has a brand new homebase under the banner of Simply Stated, along with 8 other snazzy new blogs and KvO's fabulous Adventures in Chaos. In the migration from our old platform to new, the ring post (thankfully just the ring post) mysteriously disappeared. We're not sure exactly how except that there was a technical glitch. It might be a bit egotisitical of me to think that someone might have saved or printed out the post, but just on the offchance....would you send it to me if you have it? Send to ShesNearlyWed@gmail.com. (Rewriting it seems like an impossible task. Maybe someday...) The worst part is there was a call...

Here's where I was not last week: The Running of the Brides, the annual slash and grab at Filene's Basement where bridal gown prices are marked down by 95% and brides trash the place looking for "the one." Instead, I wait for March 18 when I will see my dress for the first time. As a larger sized bride, I've decided to forgo the pain and suffering of size 5 samples and just have one made to fit. RIght? And I didn't want to spend a fortune. Right again. So I did some research online and found Blue, a sliver of a boutique in Manhattan' s East Village where dressmaker Christina Kara sews them up at a reasonable price. When I arrived at the shop several weeks ago, Kara was standing outside in the cold in sturdy Chanel rain boots, puffing on a cigarette. Inside her tiny shop it's nothing...
