Got the Sniffes? Here's a Better Way to Blow
Posted on Feb 18, 2009 9:46:05 AM  |  By LizKrieger

Landingmentholthumbnail I've read about this in a few places over the last few days (originally reported here) but I am still just fascinated by it. Apparently, blowing your nose when you're stuffed up isn't all that advisable.

Here's why: Turns out, when you give a good blow into your tissue, you actually generate enough force to propel mucus back up into the sinuses, which may cause further congestion or infection.

Luckily there's a better way to blow so that you don't cause such a pressure build-up: you just give a good honk one nostril at a time. But is that really as satisfying when you're down-and-out with a cold, feel like you can't breathe, and just want a release?

When you couple this with the 'new' way the CDC advises we sneeze or cough (into the crook of an elbow or sleeve instead of our hands), it's a whole new way dealing with being sick!

I don't know about blowing your nose that way, but I have to say I am a fan of sneezing/coughing into your elbow. I teach second grade and tell this to my kids all the time! There is nothing worse than seeing them sneeze into their hands and then touch a doorknob/desk/pencil/crayon. Eek!

Please my fellow readers (especially my fellow public transit riders), sneeze and cough into your elbow, sleeve, arm, ANYTHING but your hand. THANKS!

Huge fan of sneezing into your elbow. I've taught all of my students to do this, and I'm currently trying to train my husband to do it too (haha).

Also... when I was little that's how I learned to blow my nose; one nostril at a time. The problem is my nose-blows are SO LOUD... I was hoping you had a quiet suggestion .haha.
