Given the economic climate, this has turned out to be a decidedly different Holiday season—especially when it comes to shopping. Every season, we all vow to cut back but then wind up spending more than we intended. From my unscientific observations of fellow shoppers on my trips to the Short Hills Mall, caution was indeed the buzzword of the month. I didn't have to drive around endlessly for parking and the lines were never a nightmare. Earlier this week, there was one place that I did have to wait more than any other: Mrs. Field's . Yup, the cookie place was bustling with activity.
The majority of the people in line weren't looking for gifts for other people. They were taking the time to give themselves a small treat (me included). Now I wouldn't advocate making a cookie run too often, but there is something immensely satisfying about an inexpensive indulgence. It can provide a momentary respite from the stress, chaos and stark realities most of us are facing. But a good chocolate chip cookie isn't the only thing that will do the trick. For my cousin Jodi, it is lighting the candles she has scattered around her house. For my mother, it was always either the New York Times crossword puzzle or a book (even a cheap bodice-ripper she picked up at a thrift store). And most days for me it is a challenging Pilates workout.
As you run around making sure that your family, friends and assorted ones enjoy themselves this season, please don't forget yourself. Indulge in the treat that enriches your life. It will help keep you sane in such uncertain times.
So tell me this: What is your indulgent treat?
