What's Your Workout Mantra?
Posted on Oct 20, 2008 9:50:47 AM  |  By LizKrieger

2933056234_aac26600cf Over the last 15 or so years that I've been running, I've come to rely on certain pithy statements/mantras. Mostly they just help me stay motivated—to get out of bed on a cold day, to take that run when I'm feeling tired or uninspired, or to plow through the last mile of a long run. (Full disclosure: This morning, NOTHING could wrench me from my warm bed, as the temperature in New York City was barely 40 degrees. I totally ignored my alarm clock and feel a bit guilty now. Fall. Is. Officially. Here—and winter is coming!)

Anyways, here's a few that I count on to keep me going, below. Obviously, they are sort of running-specific (and for a few, I thank the readers of Runner's World ) but they can be tailored to any exercise or exercise regime.

*There will come a day when you cannot do this. Today is not that day.
*I've never regretted going for a run, but I have regretted skipping one. [Eek, see paragraph one...]
*If you'd have gone for that run when you first started thinking about it, you'd be home by now.
*Nothing in the world can take the place of persistance. [Gracias, Calvin Coolidge]

And since I'm always looking for new fuel for my fire, I'd love to know what keeps you motivated—whether it's to work out, to eat right, or just to do something that's not always easy? I'll post the most inspiring ones!

I use this when doing exercises and I can't think I can go on anymore:

The body is stronger than the mind; the body is stronger than the mind... It really helps me go on.

Thanks for your mantras!

I've become a real fan of stickk.com - making my resolutions public to my friends really helps me stay motivated. Similar to WW meetings in that way....

When I can't drag myself out of bed to go for a run, I think of these two quotes:

"Workouts are like brushing my teeth; I don't think about them, I just do them. The decision has already been made. " - PattiSue Plummer, U.S. Olympian

"If I can survive war, layoffs, disappointments, and all the misfortunes life brings, I can go out for a run." DOUG WIDOWSKI

After going to that site you suggested, I'm adding this one to the mix: "Someone who is busier than you is running right now." - Nike

"Do your yoga today, so you can do it tomorrow."
I can't remember where I've heard this one, but it makes a lot of sense to me and it really keeps me going during those cold and gloomy winter months.

When I was running in my first season of track and it hurt lol, I used to repeat to myself: "Pain is only weakness leaving the body"
