I Tried It: "Yoga Toes" Toe Stretchers

Yoga_toes I've seen the ad in the back of many health and fitness magazines for some time—these little rubber things you put between your toes to stretch out the tendons of the feet. Since I am one of those people who actually loves to have things between my toes (i.e. the little toe separators at the pedicurist feel GREAT to me) I was excited to test them out.



What's more, the Yoga Toes people claim that with regular use (5-15 minutes a day), you can actually undo some of the damage you do to your feet by wearing pinchy, tight shoes—a crime of which I am definitely guilty. In a few minutes a day, you can stretch cramped feet and toes, realign out-of-whack tendons, and relax foot muscles. They also say it can help you with your yoga practice, since many postures depend on a strong, wide foot base and the wider you can spread your toes, the easier it is to balance in things like tree pose, or warrior I.



While I've only used them for a a total of 10 minutes over two days at this point, here's my short-term review. Stay tuned for further updates.



1. They are a LOT bigger than they look in the ad. Meaning: you really have to streeeeetch your toes apart to place them into the little holes. These are nothing like the petite foam pedicure things I am used to—these puppies are bloated, un-dainty, and a bit of a challenge!



2. It's best to lube up your feet with a light lotion or a foot spray before slipping them on—so that in fact you CAN 'slip' them on. The rubber can get sort of tacky and make it harder to get your tight toes into the openings.



3. Start with just a few minutes if your foot muscles (like mine) are quite tight. I was midway through watching some mindless TV when I realized that YOW! My feet felt ready for a breather. Reading the Users Guide from Yoga Pro can help, too.

I bought these a while ago after seeing them in the back of a Real Simple magazine. I love them! I generally do about 45-60 minutes once a week. I put them on while I watch tv and forget about them. I did have to work up to that amount of time though. Also if you wet them with room temp water (which the package suggests) they are easier to manipulate so you can get them on your feet. They are bigger and smaller than the picture. For example the hole for my big toe is very small, or I have a really large big toe :) and I broke that apart on one side. I am considering getting a second pair but haven't done it yet.

I've always been curious about these, but thought they were too gimmicky to try. I'm interested to see if they continue to work. I know that my feet could definitely use the help.

Kristin I have been using them for about a year now if that helps you out. That may explain why I do them once a week for 45-60 minutes :) The other thing I do is while I am watching TV I am also painting my finger nails so I really don't want to be moving around a lot. And it generally takes me that long to let my nails dry to where I am comfortable using my hands.

Most podiatrists believe surgery is the way to go with foot ailments. This device is gentle, it works, and is far less painful and expensive than a foot surgery. Give them try!
