Home office makeover, part 4
Posted on Feb 10, 2009 7:30:00 AM  |  By ErinDoland

After many days and a lot of elbow grease, I can now officially present to you the efforts of my labor.

Before:

090129office

After:

090210office

I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am for my new office. It may not be the prettiest sight in the world (Holly is definitely the interior designer in the Simply Stated Home section), but it is incredibly efficient. It meets every one of my office needs. It truly is my dream office.

Some more project details:

  • One of my goals was to improve the ergonomic conditions of my desk. This started with a new desk chair, continued to a raised laptop stand, and finished with a second keyboard at a natural resting height.
  • Immediately to the left of my office phone is a small Elfa basket that holds my glasses and my cell phone. These two objects cannot get lost or my head will explode, so I created a very specific place for them to live.
  • On the shelf above my second monitor are the project boxes and books that I use a couple times a day. Having instant access to these has already saved me minutes a day from having to trek over to my closet.
  • I'll be honest, I was shocked to learn that my other work-related books didn't even take up an entire shelf of storage. I thought for certain I had more books -- this was a pleasant surprise.
  • On the hanging standard between my two monitors, I have two magnetic spice tins with paper clips and binder clips. I'm planning to get more as they have turned out to be very handy storage bins.
  • The drawers are unbelievably useful. I have no idea how I survived without drawers for two years.
  • One thing that isn't in the picture is my step stool. I wouldn't be able to access anything on the top shelf without it.

Do you have any questions for me about the project? Ask them in the comments and I'll try to answer them the best I can.

Erin, I'm inspired. I've been slowly putting together a plan for a new home workspace, and this step-by-step makeover is really helpful.

Are the magnetic spice tins close to the monitors? Magnets can mess up a monitor. (Think of an impressionistic painting with swirling colors!)

Erin...

Great makeover, it looks very functional, and I like how you kept the wood cabinet, it really blends with the mid-century look you mentioned you have in your home. I do have a question tho.... I have sets of big scissors in my craft area on the wall, could you tell me where you found yours? .. I love them, they remind me of being a little girl and the endless hours of crafts I did.

@San -- The giant scissors came from Pottery Barn Kids. I saw them a couple years ago and was so entertained by them, I had to have them.

Well done! I did the same thing with my home office two years ago (my photos are in your Uncluttered Workspaces Flickr pool), but I also did the opposite wall as a craft storage and production area. Not a day goes by that I don't think to myself what a great idea this was. Elfa is somewhat expensive, although if you buy during their twice-yearly sale (one of which just ended, unfortunately), it's not prohibitive. Installation, as you indicate, is really easy - even for an all-thumbs type like me.

I see you also used that little trick of adding those little baskets that are meant for the Elfa back-of-door storage solution. I love those! That's how I keep all my cords organized - there's a big basket attached to one of the vertical standards under my desk area, and a large power strip in there, and everything is snaked back and plugged into that.

Great office space! Unfortunately, I missed the sale, and my office is in need of a complete overhaul. I saw a Rubbermaid imitation of the Elfa shelves, but I'm not sure if they match in quality; do you know of any suitable, less expensive Elfa alternatives? I would love to get started on my own office!

It looks great. I may have missed this, but where do you use your sewing machine (or other crafts)? My big challenge is finding space both for my office-type things and my craft-type things. If I had unlimited space and funds, they might each warrant their own style of organization and workspace but of course I have neither the space nor the dollars.

I'd almost forgotten to check in to see the final results of your office makeover- thankfully this site's search function works well. Congrats on your new organized office. Love the Elfa shelves and that you have plenty of room for your BOOKS. I am inspired.
