DIY Fabric Wallpaper: Would you try it?
Posted on Feb 23, 2009 1:27:00 PM  |  By KristinAppenbrink

I am a renter, and so that dramatically limits a lot of my options when it comes to personalizing my living space. So, I'm always looking for ways to decorate that won't permanently "damage" my apartment. I came across a slide show of ideas on CasaSugar that had several renter-friendly alternatives to paint.

There was one that I had never heard of before: hanging fabric as wallpaper with liquid or spray starch. Am I late on the band wagon with this one, or is this news to you as well?

Starch_fabric

I went to the Linit Starch website, where they have instructions for turning any washable fabric (though they recommend lightweight polished cottons, ginghams, or chintzes) into custom wallpaper. It seems pretty straightforward. Here is a quick summary of the instructions:

-measure and cut fabric panels to fit your wall (matching pattern if necessary)
-spray or paint starch on the top part of the wall
-affix fabric panel to the starched area and continue adding the starch and fabric to the baseboard
-use push pins to temporarily hold fabric in place
-spray or paint another round of starch on top of the fabric and smooth out any bubbles
-repeat for additional panels
-cut overlapping fabric once everything is completely dry

Supposedly you can simply remove the fabric panels when you are tired of them, with only the help of a little water. Just think you could have your walls covered in any of these:

Needless to say, I love this idea, but I'm scared of trying it. What do you think is this something you would do? Should I test it out?

I would try it! It sounds like a great idea. I would think that the starch would just make the wall a bit sticky.

Try it! And post photos! Sounds like a fab idea. The walls would just need to be washed afterwards. Maybe test an area of the wall the see how well it holds up to being washed first.

I have heard about this for years and read accounts from military wives who always do this where they are stationed on a base. Sounds safe enough. I would suggest pre-washing the fabric so you know it won't bleed when the starch wets it.

When I was in apartments, I would get around the white walls by suspending fabric panels from dowel rods in strategic places, sush as behind the bed, for some visual impact. I only needed to place two nails for the dowel to hang from.

Yes, I would absolutely try it. This seems like a great alternative to the typical adhesive way. If I was a little nervous I would probably try a small area first to make sure it looks how I thought it would, and most importantly comes off like it is suppose to. Another method for applying fabric to the wall is good old staples. Of course they leave small holes, but they can be puttied pretty easy. Thanks for sharing this great idea!

Try testing a small square first in a not so obvious part of you apartment.

This sounds like a great idea! I find I'd rather have most fabric patterns on my wall than wallpaper patterns anyway!
