Shopping
Kitchen Wishlist
Posted on Jan 2, 2009 11:26:52 AM  |  By HollyBecker

I know, I know... I'm already thinking about shopping but it's true and I'll tell you why. I've been taking some time off over the holidays and this means lots of time watching cooking shows which has motivated me to add yet another resolution to my 2009 list - beef up my skills in the kitchen and eat out less. I have a few things I'd love for my kitchen this year and since a few are ones that I think you'll love I'll do a little show and tell... ready?

First up, a tea kettle. An electric one. A portable tea kettle not only uses less energy (yay!) than a stovetop kettle (up to 50% less energy) because it boils water super fast but tea gurus will tell you that the perfect water temperature can make or break a good cup of tea. I love the Breville from Williams Sonoma but at $150 it's a little out of my price range. If it's in your budget I highly suggest them. You can even boil eggs in it because the heating unit is not inside of the kettle but on the bottom. (Tip: If Breville is a name you love, you can find a similar kettle at Amazon made by them for $68 here.)

The Breville is at the top of my list but it's expensive, so I found another electric kettle that should do the trick: the Protor Silex tea kettle at Amazon. It lacks some of the features that the Breville has but in the end I just want hot water fast so I'm not that particular. It's in white and the heating unit is inside the actual pot. I purchased one in Germany for my apartment over there and used it for everything for tea but also for instant soup and hot cocoa. I drink A LOT of tea, at least two cups a day. I replaced coffee with tea back in August and I've never looked back.

Another electric kettle option if you want a stainless steel electric kettle like the Breville, only an affordable version opt for the Aroma kettle at Amazon for $31. I prefer stainless as I don't have to wonder if I'll die from the former model with all that plastic potentially getting into my water. This is the kettle I've added to my wishlist.

Okay enough kettle talk. Now let's get down to cooking and food, mainly sweets. I really like cupcakes and muffins and find the 'lids' the best part, don't you? The Crown Heart cupcake pan is perfect for me for this very reason, a larger lid, or crown, on top not only gives you more to love but more to decorate. And it's shaped like a heart, how cute. This one is available at Williams Sonoma for $24.

And do you want to see what I'm DYING to own? I can already hear the next dress size calling my name but this pan and what you can do with it just may be worth it. I've had this thing on my mind for at least a month and I've decided that while I won't use it every single day, I will use it more than I do some other pans in my kitchen so I think I'll donate those to charity to make room for the Ebelskiver Filled-Pancake Pan for $40, also at WS. I love the idea of making filled pancakes sprinkled with powdered sugar and I'm already thinking of Nutella-filled pancakes... You can watch the how-to video here if you'd like to know how to use this clever pan.

And finally, the Herbes de Provence. I not only love that they come in a sweet little ceramic holder, but everyone I talk to about them seems to love this melody of herbs (thyme, basil, savory, fennel and lavender) that can be used to season meats, french fries, and more for $16.50 (yes, Williams Sonoma).

A few additional items on my 2009 wishlist include: a new baking sheet that isn't warped and a few new wooden cutting boards. What about you, are you inspired to cook more in the new year? With so many on budgets that limit dining out, it's a good time to stay in and whip up some of your own creations. Once you spend the initial investment for the tools that you'll need, you'll start to notice all of the money you're saving by eating in.

What's on your wishlist for the kitchen?

Now you have me wanting new kitchen goodies! I have had an ebelskiver pan forever (an old iron one) - when I was growing up we made them frequently, and they were always a treat! Filling them with nutella sounds delish... I think I'll try it on my next batch!

i'm definitely inspired to cook more this year, especially since I snagged some great christmas gifts this year including a kitchenaid mixer (yay!) with the pasta maker attachment and a combo food processor/blender.
I've been eyeing that filled pancake pan for awhile. I usually try to resist one use items in the kitchen but the recipe in the WS catalog looks so delicious.

I want my kitchenaid stand mixer...my little hand held mixer is not going to make it much longer with all the stuff I have been baking. Sadly I have no room for it in my tiny condo, so my parents have custody of it (it was my great Aunt's, and they are keeping it for me since my Mom has her own.) until we get a house. There are certain things I will lug up and down from storage in the basement, the mixer is not one of them! :)

I have a vintage cast iron Ebelskiver Pan it is lovely. I will have to try Nutella filled, that sounds amazing!

I love my old old Phillips electric kettle, when it dies the Breville model will be my top replacement choice.

My KitchenAid stand mixer and my 14cup Cuisinart food processor pretty much cover all my bases. They were the only electric items I brought overseas with me besides our DVD player (SO SO much cheaper in the USA too!) and boy were they worth it!

I want a good sharpener for my steel knives. That would help, I'm so scared I'm gonna wreck them with a cheap one or something...I need to learn more about caring for my knives. My blender is essential to my regular smoothie consumption, but it's a loud one, so I'd like a quiet model. I just read about the Vita Mix 5200 and that's a crazy piece of machinery, but a little over the top for me I think. I actually want a bread machine...my husband eats a lot of bread and I wish we could save money there by making our own. And a silicone spatula/scraper with a long, skinny handle. I really need one, def. more a need than a wish!

I really really want a Le Creuset 6qt dutch oven, or a Lodge one, but Le Creuset has better colors. I'd like to think I'd get a green one, or sky blue, or something, but bottom line, I want it to always go with the stuff on the table, so I suppose a white one is best. yep, always drool over those dang dutch ovens!

oh I LOVE ebelskiver! We used to spend lots of summers in Denmark and bought a pan there. YUMMM!

I love my Ebelskiver pan! Just got one for Christmas (I work at Williams Sonoma), and it works like a dream. I've posted about it on my blog here: http://ovenlove.blogspot.com/2008/12/christmas-morning-treats-ebelskivers.html

We just got the Keurig home brewing system ($129.00 at Costco), and I consider it the best addition to our kitchen to the microwave! It brews single cups of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate using "K cups", which are pre-measured, single serving containers. I'm totally hooked!

Save yourself the money (and the potential for a larger clothing size!) and don't buy the WS ebelskiver pan. I know three different people who've bought it and say it's NOT as easy to use as it looks, leading to wasted batter, inconsistent results, and overall unhappiness.

I'm all for pancakes and anything stuffed with chocolate, but I'd say this is one that you can safely skip!

Thank you all for your comments. I should post about kitchen stuff more often, I often refrain because I think it may put you to sleep but obviously not! Yay for kitchen gadgets and eating more for 2009!

I have the Proctor Silex tea kettle and I absolutely love it! I got one for all my friends that are tea drinkers for Christmas. I have had mine about a year. It is super fast in boling water. I use it for tea everyday and am always coming up with new ideas for it. It is great in the mornings for oatmeal for the kids, and they love ramen noodles for an after school snack and it works great for that as well. If you like instant coffee, it works like a dream. Hot chocolate on a cold, snowy winter day...in a snap you have warm, creamy cocoa.

"Santa" brought me the Ebelskiver Filled-Pancake Pan and I have already used it three times! My newest kitchen BFF. My daughters love pancakes, now they can't get enough. Can you say popovers, eat your heart out? Well, maybe not that excited, one can never replace a popover. However, this is a delicious alternative to waffles, muffins, and pancakes.
Thank goodness I can make all the tea I want and FAST, with my electric kettle....need caffeine after all the cooking! That nutella suggestion just may happen this weekend! Yum-o! Thanks for a great share!

Holly, great subject. First of all, I am committed to making more pasta stuffed foods from different countries -- agnolotti and ravioli and cappelletti from different regions in Italy, Maultashen from the Schwäbisch region of Germany, and of course different forms of Dim Sum. Also, I want to continue with my developing experiences of slow-cooking roasts and meats, such as Bresato (braised beef) slow cooked in Barolo. I might even try a goose this winter, which I have always shied away from.

I will be getting an ice cream maker and pasta maker for my Kitchen Aid this year. This past season, two very sweet guests brought me Microplanes, which are the most fabulous invention ever... so I have one for each of my kitchens.

I am committed to make a complete set of serving pieces and plates for my new kitchen as well. Lots to do...

Best wishes!

I got the Ebelskivean for Hanukkah and I am trying it out tomorrow. I can't wait! And although the container looks great, I bought Herbes de Provence at Marshalls for $4.99 so I would definitely check other places if I were you!

I got the heart cupcake pan for Valentine's Day last year, and I am excited to use it for the first time. I don't have too many things on my wish list right now - I got a lot of them for my August wedding last year. I am working my way through using all the stuff and am trying out new recipes. I made risotto for the first time on Christmas Eve!

My most favorite kitchen items are my big Le Creuset Dutch oven - especially in the winter - and my Braun hand-held kitchen whizzer. My brain is trying to come up with the technical term - ah - yes - Immersion Blender. it's awesome for blending soups etc;
