Organizing
Is getting organized one of your 2009 resolutions?
Posted on Jan 13, 2009 7:30:00 AM  |  By ErinDoland

Many of you may have written "get organized" as a resolution for 2009. If you fall into this category, let me give you a few tips to get you started on your journey:

  1. Be specific. "Get organized" is a great resolution, but can be overwhelming if you don't break it down into more specific parts. Make a list of the areas you want to improve (bedroom closet, wood shop in garage, backyard shed) and try to keep the list under 12 (there are only 12 months in a year).
  2. Set a schedule. Assign each of your projects a specific month. Outdoor work should be scheduled during the warmer months, and indoor work during the cooler months. I also like to plan bedroom closet organizing projects for the end of the winter or the end of the summer.
  3. Create tasks. Once you have your projects identified and scheduled, create tasks to be accomplished for each project. Again, be specific with these tasks (sort through food in pantry and dispose of expired items, call Bob the Handyman at # on the 12th to schedule appointment for the 30th, measure width and depth of closet).
  4. Be diligent. Procrastination is simple, and it may be the reason you have "get organized" on your 2009 resolution list. Fight procrastination by keeping your interest focused on the outcome of your efforts. You will gain great rewards by being more organized, so don't let procrastination tempt you from achieving your goals.
  5. Accept slips and falters, and move on. Everyone slips and falters, so don't let these missteps keep you from getting back on track to achieving your goals. If you get off your schedule in January, that doesn't keep you from committing to your project in February.
  6. Measure your progress. Whether it be photographs, a journal, or just bragging to your friends, keep track of your progress and see the difference your efforts are making in your life.

Good luck to you as your take on your new year's resolutions!

Thanks for the tips! My successful resolution last year was to get the house organized. Now that's done, so I'm moving on to decluttering. It sounds kind of backwards, but I got tired of looking for things all the time, so the organizing had to come first!

As usual, your post are simple, direct, and uncluttered! Thanks, Erin!

great tips, even if it's not for getting organized, but it works for any goal. i think the hardest is forgiving yourself and moving forward when you slip up!

One of the best helpful tips I read somewhere was to use "negative" feedback on your resolutions. That means putting up a picture of you on the refrigerator (or your workdesk) of you in a bathing suit, or of your messy desk. These constant reminders, while negative, can help motivate you to success. Last year I resolved to do a triathlon. My negative thought was, "what would I say to myself and to my friends and family at the end of the year without having accomplished my resolution"

Also, I use internet tools to help me. Jott is a great service for putting those personal tasks online and reminding me of what I need to do. Qlubb is a great tool for helping my group of triathlete partners be online and organized. There's a Web tool for just about anything these days.

Great post! Very inspirational.

During January, I've been setting aside 15-30 minutes a day to sorting out closets or my desk, RSS feeds, files and so on. Both analog and digital. I haven't been very structured about it, apart from setting the time and sticking to it, and so far it's worked very well for me.
