Do You Host Theme Parties?
Posted on Jan 12, 2009 6:58:00 AM  |  By HollyBecker

Show of hands, please... do you host theme parties? I have some friends who throw them for every occasion under the sun from the Superbowl to the Kentucky Derby, even the newly divorced BFF gets a theme party in their honor. Have you heard the latest one that's all the rage? It's the Inauguration party for Obama -- only you can have it at your very own home in case you were not invited to the ball. Complete with Obama cups, napkins, and decorations.

In contrast to the theme queens, I have other friends who absolutely could care less about putting up a Pinata or hanging some garlands. They think it's tacky and ridiculous. They won't even attend them. And then there's the third group, the in-betweeners. They're the crew who will gladly attend a theme party and even bring the bull and the bear cupcakes, but they only host about twice a year max. If they have children, add a few more to that number for birthdays, graduations, and the like.

If you have an interest in creating a fun party for your friends, head on over to Plum Party. It's a fantastic website that I've known about for years, they cover every theme imaginable so you're bound to find something. Products are categorized by theme and item so you can't get frustrated, they make the planning part very easy. With more and more skipping vacations and eating out less, a theme party just may be a fun way to do something creative without laying out a ton of cash. Plus, you have to admit, a theme party does promise to make for a memorable evening complete with lots of goofball photos to share afterwards!

Where do you fall? In between? Or are you a theme party queen? Are you a hater? I think an Aprés Ski or Turkish Delights evening may be kind of fun...

I love the Apres Ski ideas. Never tried it, but I'm a big fan of theme parties, particularly TV themed. Lost party in just a few more days!

I have hosted a few Theme Parties in my day - but none recently... I once did a Bachlor (the show) Party with themed cookies etc and I've also thrown a Prom Party - where everyone wore old prom dresses and we tooks pics against a cheesy backdrop :)

I think theme parties actually take a lot of work out of planning a party. It's a lot easier to throw one together if you have an idea or goal in mind. The theme can be subtle where it's not obviously a theme to the party attendees, but helps the hostess focus her attentions like "Italian Bistro". On the flip side, it could be going all out like Halloween or the Superbowl. Funny, I just did a series of posts last week about cocktail parties, specifically addressing how picking a theme can make it easier to plan. I think it's just that time of year. Christmas is done and we're stuck inside devising fun things to do.

I love theme parties! A couple of years ago, I had an "Absolutely Fabulous" themed party. There were individual keepsake menus with Patsy and Eddy on them, pitchers of martinis and margaritas, AbFab trivia, and a screening of six favorite episodes that I had people vote on in the weeks before the party. It was a scream!

... And for those of you throwing inauguration parties or are in NYC, check out Oren's Daily Roast (www.orensdailyroast.com) and their new freshly roasted coffee, "Blend 44: Beans You Can Believe In." Great to serve at those home parties, and if you didn't get an invite you can listen to the inauguration on 1/20 from 10:44 - 1:44p at any one of nine Oren's locations with a free cup of Blend 44 or buy yourself your own hill of beans to grind at home honoring our 44th president. With high quality standards and ethical business practices, these are beans you can believe in!
