AT Chicago: Does Your House Have a Name?
Posted on Oct 6, 2008 10:31:04 PM  |  By KristinAppenbrink

Apartment Therapy Chicago had a great post today about naming your house. They showed before and after photos of a house formerly known as "Mint Grandma" and now in search of a new name.

I love this idea, because I name everything. I used to live in this gorgeous brick house on Kingman Boulevard, which we appropriately named KINGMAN (yes, in all caps).

(The tree is unfortunately placed. Behind it there are stairs up to a gated entrance)

It had a grandeur much like an estate out of a Jane Austen novel, just on a bit smaller scale. While it might be a little bit crazy, I think it increases personality and a sense of connection to your home or other possessions. I'll admit to having named cars, furniture, and appliances as well.

But I want to know if your house has a name, and if you've named any other inanimate objects in your home?

My friends have a tradition of naming their apartments. Among others:

- The Treehouse (all three roommates had animal nicknames)
- The Colony (both for the extreme number of roommates and the unfortunate spider inhabitation on the balcony)
- The Tower (five stories high... very narrow)
- Hotel Grand (located on Grand Boulevard, formerly an embassy residence)
- The Crossroads (located at the interchange of two important subway lines)

I occasionally joke about my bedroom as being "The Troll Hole," since it's in the basement.

So... yes.

I posted this on AT Chicago as well, but I named my parents' house "Casa Fresa", as in House of Fred and Sandra. My computer is named Marcus, and my last iPod was named ZiZi. When ZiZi died, she was replaced with ZiZi II. Fianlly my iPhone is named Zoe. I guess I just like naming electronics :)

We live on a giant Dutch barge here on the Thames. It's name is Hendrik (as all boats are named!) but in a few years we're going to revert back to its original name from 1933, Tijdgeest ("Spirit of the Age") which suits her much better, we think.

A friend names all of her houseplants, though. I don't think I'd be able to remember all of ours...

So weird...I live just down the street from that house! It is beautiful! =)
In college, 15-20 guys (it varied each month) lived in an old frat house called Big Blue, named as such based on the color and the enormity of the house. Some recently moved into The Alamo, which bears a striking resemblance to the original.

A friend of mine named her car the same as my first name. When the car was in a terrible accident and "died", another friend thought she meant that I had died.

In University I lived in a very old Victoria in Chinatown in Toronto which had lovely brick work. The bricks had been painted over in an awful yellow colour. After living there for three years I came up with the name: The Yellow House of Insanity. It was a madhouse so the name seemed like a perfect fit.

My husband and I have named our house "The Love Shack" , enough said.

I grew up on a small hobby farm, which my family and friends lovingly referred to as "The Funny Farm and Health Spa".

My sofa is named "Adele" after the friend who came to work at my company (I got a "finder's fee" bonus when they hired her and I spent it on buying the couch).

Another friend named her Ford Explorer "Jack" and now her Toyota minivan "Vanessa".

been thinking about "CrackerBox Palace" for a long time - I'm serious. Before that we thought about "Crow Heights" as we live in the Arbor Heights area of Seattle where there are more crows around than people, pets, or cars.

forgot to mention I've named my macbook "Lily" and my ipod "minilily". My iMac is named "Gloria".

Love the idea of naming a house. I will have to think about what to name ours!

My current car is named Calvin... my previous car, a 1986 Celica, was Selma. I want my husband to call his car Hobbes, but he doesn't get the whole naming thing...

In a similar vein, my dad needed a cane this last year after some serious surgeries. He was very proud of himself one day when he said, "I finally came up with a name for it. Ichabod Cane." I guess it runs in the family!

In college I drove a delightfully tiny Honda CRX named Rollerskate. I never had a speeding problem until learning to accelerate and shift the turbo engine of that little car.

My first car I named Athena Vesta (after Greek and Roman goddesses - I was in a world history class at the time). My current car I named Liliuokalani Wahine (last Hawaiian queen and 'girl surfer' - she has Hawaiian vanity plates and seatcovers). I just introduce her as Lily.

I've lived in named residences ever since my junior year of college, when i moved into a communal house named Bonsai Oaks. Other local houses were named things like House of Chaos, Pearly Gates, House of Aluminum (had a wall completely covered in beer/soda cans), House of Dice, and so on. Houses that I've lived in have been called things like Quietude, De Nile (was on a street called Cleopatra Place), Downside Up, and Annelon.

My current house was named by my partner, and is called Moonlit Terrace.

My car's name is Regina and my bike's name is Marjorie.

I grew up in the 50's - 60's with three brothers. We called our house The Ponderosa. I name lots of odd things. A wild turtle in our backyard was called Turbo. A tiny, wispy little spider that lives in a potted green plant on the kitchen windowsill is called Sam. I am thinking now that perhaps towns should have house naming programs. You name your house and register it with the city for a fee. Then your mail could be sent to your house name - that would be fun.

giving a name to your home is a very common practice in India, where I live.
