Cleaning
Clean Your Washing Machine
Posted on Sep 16, 2008 11:13:40 AM  |  By KristinAppenbrink

A couple of months ago, we answered a reader question about how to clean a smell out of your washing machine. And last week our managing editor, Kristin van Ogtrop was on the today show and also talked about cleaning out you washing machine. See the video below.

But we've gotten some letters about how to clean a high efficiency or front-loading washing machine. If you want to try a product, you can use Affresh tablets, which are recommended by Whirlpool, Maytag, and Amana or you can run vinegar through your washing machine with warm water. You might not be able to pour an entire gallon of vinegar in the washer as Kristin recommends in the clip, but you can probably get the majority of that in the drum without spilling over. And by using vinegar instead of bleach, you won't have to worry about it ruining your clothes or floor if a little bit spills over.

Have you had luck with any other methods of cleaning your front-loading washing machine?

How often should I clean my washing machine?

Also, is there a good way to clean my dishwasher?... it's only 4 months old, but it has a funky smell. We always rinse our dishes before loading them, so I'm not sure what's causing the smell.

i think i will give the affresh tablets a try next time my washing machine needs a clean, think it will work out a lot easier than getting a gallon of vinegar in there

*Stephanie--Those are both great questions. I'm going to see what I can find out and try to get an answer for you soon. Stay tuned!

Okay Stephanie, the Whirlpool Institute of Fabric Science recommends cleaning your washer monthly for best results.

And as for cleaning your dishwasher, you can use the same method as cleaning your washing machine, but with different proportions. Use a cup of vinegar in the detergent dispenser and run an empty cycle. Or if you're trying to remove stains that have built up, run an empty cycle with a packet of powdered lemonade in the detergent cup.

I hope this helps!

I've had a front load washer for just over a year now and have never needed to wash it.

The saleslady told me two important things as preventative maintenance: first, use less soap than reccommended (high-effiency, of course) and second, use hot water regularly.

I wash most of my laundry in cold water, but I wash whites in hot water. This seems to do the trick.

Enzymes actually work. There are some laundry detergents that contain enzymes that supposedly helps prevent moldy clothes and washing machine. But the cleaning action in most front load wahsing machines break down the enzymes. This is why you still have to run enzymes by running an extra rinse cycle. Lemon juice is also a good substitute to vinegar. This works well in reducing mold and calcium build up.
