Oh how i wish I lived on the west coast right now. No, not for the sunny skies and year-round warm temps but just so that I could visit Freeway Building Materials. This place was featured on the premiere episode of Top Design and when I saw the amazing one-of-a-kind finds dated back pre-1960's, I had to do some detective work to find out where it was located. Items are donated from movie sets, demolition projects, and construction sites. With LA being the movie capitol of the world, what better setting than this for some awesome antique shopping. The mass amounts of inventory may be overwhelming at first but a junkyard priced claw-foot tub is definitely worth the rummage time. Many items are perfect for DIY projects. Now, if only I could find a location on the east coast! Do you have a great antiques store in your area?
Posted by: Diana| September 12, 2008 at 11:03 AM Nice writing. Although, I don't know of any antique stores in New York yet on which I would be fond of. Stumbling upon such great stores is always a fun adventure, especially when travelling. That said, i was excited to find that several great shops have online presence now, which makes for at least good fun perusing from your desk at home. my favorite to browse is Salvage One (link: http://www.remodelista.com/2008/02/18/slow-design-salvage-one/). I also bookmarked a great listing of online salvage resources: http://www.hewnandhammered.com/hewn_and_hammered/2005/05/architectural_s_1.html |

I was jealous when I saw that on Top Design too! Luckily we have some relatively good antique stores in NC - one of my favs is Father & Sons in Raleigh, NC. Full of midcentury and quirky finds. Then the Liberty Antique show happens in 2 weeks - I'm counting down - can't wait!
