Hands down, the herb of summer for me is basil, and right now it is booming in the garden. For those who start it from seed, I applaud you. My method is to plant established seedlings which I did back in May. I bought two varieties, the traditional green plant and a seductive purple beauty, from the plant nursery and dotted them around the garden. There are tons of uses for basil, especially with tomato season right around the corner. Check back on Tuesday for my favorite meal featuring this herb. If you could only have one herb in your garden, what would it be?
Posted by: melissa| July 31, 2008 at 12:29 PM Basil for me too! I have 5 green basil plants and a purple basil in the garden and have been making pesto and freezing it once a week. Ten batches so far! Thyme! Although people often think basil is the key to a good Italian red sauce, actually thyme is the one! On 06/11/09 I received an e-mail intitled "Get the most From Expensive Herbs" and a party idea. I wanted to see the recipie booklet that went with the herbed tomato sauce Real Simple recommended, but the file is corrupt. Can you help me get it back? I don't need the graphics, just the recipies. I am planning my party now. |

Rosemary! It goes in everything from stews to roasts to (my personal favourite) omelettes, and once you plant one, it's there for life. It takes a licking and keeps on giving, even through harsh winters. I've planted one every place I've lived over the past six years, so it's nice to think that I've been leaving a little aromatic trail...
