Does Thread Count Matter?

Although it's somewhat embarrassing to admit, I had no idea what luxury linens felt like until I got married. It was probably one of few times in life that I could get away with requesting just what I wanted, and rest assure knowing that someone just may get it for it--so I added it to my wedding registry.

Before my encounter with sweet dream splendor, I had a  very simplistic view of bedding--a sheet is just a sheet, as long as it was clean and smelled fresh, I was good to go. I don't live in a cave, so of course I was vaguely aware of the thread count concept, but I had little understanding of what it meant or what it did for the fabric. The immediate thought is that the higher the thread count the better. One thing that I quickly realized once I had a taste of something other than my $10 plaid sheet and matching pillow case, was that it's not really about the thread count. What distinguishes a $30 sheet set from a $300 set is actually the material that it is made of. Don't get me wrong, the thread count does play a role, but more important than a high number, is the right fabric. My personal favorite is pima cotton. It's only a few steps down from the exceptional Egyptian cotton, but it feels great and is reasonably priced. You'll notice an immediate difference between synthetic and pima, it's amazing. I did a little road test to see whether or not it was the thread count or fabric that made the difference. I purchased a sheet set with the same thread count as one of my current pima cotton sets, and as soon as I took it out of the package I could feel the difference. The synthetic material was much stiffer and rough to the touch. So with that said, I'm hooked.

What's your bedroom luxury?

More on thread count from Real Simple and realsimple.com:

High thread counts for sheets
If you come across a label claiming a thread count of 400 or higher but you can't open the package to feel the sheets (or there's no sample available), beware. Some manufacturers count double-ply yarn twice in order to up the thread count.

From Real Simple's September 2006 issue:

WHAT COUNTS
Thread count became a selling point partly because Americans tend to equate quality with higher numbers (think horsepower and BTUs). Smart shoppers will also factor in the brand, the type of cotton or blend, and the kind of weave. BELOW 250 It is possible to get good-quality sheets that have a low thread count. Look for Egyptian cotton or American-grown Pima cotton, which are both fine, long-staple varieties. 250 TO 400 Better-quality sheets (that is, those that are surprisingly soft and long-lasting) can be found in this range. Unless you're particularly persnickety, you should find a set that suits you and won't break the bank. 400 PLUS Elite sheets usually carry a thread count between 400 and 600. It's possible to squeeze 1,000 threads into a square inch, but expect to pay a premium for a high-count sheet from a reputable maker.

There are  tons of options for the best sheets at every price.

I love high-quality sheets. My favorite place to buy sheets is Tuesday Morning. Their closeout prices are great for me, especially since I prefer simple white bed linens. If you want to match to a specific color, you might have more trouble finding something. I recently bought a 1200 thread-count Egyptian cotton white queen sheet set for $60! They are the most amazing sheets ever!!!

I am a minimum 300 thread count girl. If you go with a synthetic or blend that contains synthetic if you look for ones that use the term sateen they are generally softer. I love a soft sheet and looking for the sateen will help you with that. In addition to a Tuesday Morning I have found some good deals at Marshalls and TJ Maxx. I haven't tried overstock.com but I want too but so far all my sheets are in good order.

I am also a minmum 300 count kind of girl. Its cold here in the winter, so soft flannel is great too. I just cannot stand the pilling that flannel gets after a bit of time. A better linen makes for a better night's rest in my world!

I definitely agree that the type of cotton used [long strand vs short strand] has a profound impact on the feel of the sheet and its wearability- is it also possible that some of the extreem high count sheets are using less thread ply strands thus thinner strands to make up their count? So the count sounds great but in reality the thickness or the thread strand is no more than more reasonable counts or 250 to 400. You also did not address the pile problem that comes with short strand materials and with man-made fibers when used in the making of sheets.

I can't tell you the last time I purchased a sheet set period!!! Never slept on egyptian cotton (yeah, I know!). But I did do some research instead of just running to the malls. There are some really good deals on Overstock.com. and just like you Nykia, I never really understood the difference between thread-count and the quality of fabric and I definitely thought the higher the thread count the better. Thanks for the advice.

I bought my boyfriend 1000 thread count sheets for his birthday last year - they are in shreds. Could not believe the holes that appeared in the sheets and pillowcases. I won't try that again - we are back to good ole percale (think JC Penney).

Kathy, I think your experience definitely proves the point that it's less about the thread count and more about the type or material. It's all about the thickness of the thread.
Sonia you have to try at least pima cotton sheets, I promise you, you'll never look back! It definitely makes a nights rest totally different.
Thanks everyone for sharing about your sheet indulgences.
Another place that has great deals on quality sheets is smartbargains.com.

Knowing a little something about thread count and where your sheets come from can make all the difference. Believe me, I learned the hard way. I finally found a store that was very helpful in educating me and I was able to pick out a nice quality set of 400 thread count sheets at a reasonalbe price. I went with Peacock Alley Soprano sheets and so far I love them - have had them for almost a year now. You really do get what you pay for. Check this website out http://www.elegantlinenspc.com/sopranosc.htm if you want more info.

To survive in the tough competitive corporate world, a business has to constantly maximize profits and reduce expenditures. Many businesses fail to know how easily they can save certain portion of their purchases with cash back business credit cards. Instead of allowing bank's interest charges take away your profits, you can go for cash back business credit cards and support your business. In earlier times, banks were known for charging a high
