If you dig fashion illustration you're in for a real treat. I stumbled upon this super cute book at Anthropologie a few weeks ago and unable to get the drawings out of my head I gave in and ordered it. This girly book is called The Cocktail - 200 Fabulous Drinks by Jane Rocca with drawings by Kat MacLeod. I'm not a bit drinker so I must confess that I purchased it for the drawings alone. I think I may even buy a second one for my girlfriend, it would make for a nice present along with a girly set of glassware and a few tea towels, don't you think? Filled with deliciously boozy drink recipes (love the names like the Southern Shag), the witty commentary gives this book a bit of an edge above the tons of other cocktail books on the market. And the cover is pink. How cute. Of course, if you aren't sold on the idea of a pink cocktail book, the collection of fanciful illustrations inside will seal the deal. I love the drawings so much that I felt inspired tonight to google the illustrator Kat MacLeod to learn more about her work. Here's what I dug up... Kat is a graphic designer and illustrator based in Australia. Aussies may recognize her work from Michi Girl and magazines like Frankie. Michi Girl is pretty much the Australia version of Daily Candy here in the states and is headed by Chloe Quigley. Kat is represented by The Jacky Winter Group where you can view lots of her work, it's all so imaginative, flirty, and feminine -- I especially like the textures, bright colors, and the patterned papers. The work feels fresh and upbeat, what's not to love? Kat also runs a small graphic design company called Ortolan alongside of her two partners Chloe Quigley and Simone Elder, the same Chloe who works with her at Michi Girl. If you'd like to learn more about Kat, blogger Natalie interviewed her right here. I just spent the past 30 minutes reading it -- it's divine. In addition to an extensive list of international clients where she has worked on projects both large and small, including illustrative work for past issues of Real Simple, Kat released a set of artful pillowcases and an embroidered "artkerchief" that would be fun to frame. All are available at Third Drawer Down. (images from penguin books, kat macleod, third drawer down, and the jacky winter group)
Posted by: Allison| June 25, 2008 at 09:21 AM Holly, I love that book! How cute and yes, I buy books all the time, just for the photos. Love the gift idea about putting it together with some cool glasses and cocktail napkins too. Actually I know where you can find those very items. :) On the same note, do you go to movies and find you are watching the decor of the movie, more than the actual plot line? Drives my husband crazy! I only buy cookbooks that have pictures, so one with cute drawings and cocktail recipes is definitely for me! Thanks for the find! This book looks so good. I believe that I have been admiring Kat's work in Cookie magazine as well. Thanks for sharing more info...love her use of color and style! If I ever had a self portrait done that is exactly how I would like it to look! |

Ha ha, I just bought a cookbook largely for the pictures. I have a whole shelf of cookbooks, so it's not like I really needed another one. But this one was filled with drawings and comics and all sorts of bits of art. It seemed almost half art-book, half cook-book. I found it at my local used bookshop, but here's the amazon listing: http://www.amazon.ca/Lappareil-Collectif/dp/2922585263/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1214399949&sr=8-11
Unfortunately it doesn't have any pictures of the inside. But trust me, it's awesome.
