Fabric Resources {not trade only}
Posted on Jun 4, 2008 7:17:00 AM  |  By HollyBecker

I adore fabric but always found it super frustrating to access the good stuff, at least before I became an interior design consultant (glorified decorator). All of that delicious trade only fabric is not available for purchase unless you work with a pro. Back 15-20 years ago, I felt like I was constantly on the outside looking in. I shopped flea markets for fabric because I couldn't find anything that I liked from the local fabric store. In the early '90s, I would hit up my friend Abigail who worked at the Boston Design Center and she'd give me showroom textile samples that I could sew into pillows and curtains. I remember sitting on the floor in her tiny studio near Fenway Park eating pizza and sorting through piles of fabric from the design center. One call from Abby that a new batch had arrived and my little legs couldn't walk me over there fast enough. We'd order a large pepperoni and drool over fabric all night.

Times have changed. Sure, we still have trade only, but with so many terrific textile designers and shops sprouting up, we now have access to gorgeous textiles available to purchase at the click of a mouse. No design professional needed. Would you like to see some of my favorites that fill the pages of my resource binder? Good!

Thank you so much for sharing! It's exactly what I needed as I am stuck in a town with NO indie fabric stores.

We don't have a ton of indie fabric stores in my city, either. I've bought from etsy & repro depot and have been very pleased with both options.

Your resources always amaze me! Thanks so much for sharing!
I am also a fabric" junky"and find that I use unexpected sources that are close to home; ie my mom's fabric remnants from who knows when, felted wool from sweaters, even table linens can be sewn together for other projects. Think out othe box, and there are endless possibilities out there.

Holly - Thanks for including twenty2 on this list of fabric resources. When my husband, Robertson, and I founded twenty2, we knew we wanted to make our hand-printed wallpapers and fabrics available to both trade professionals and retail customers. We all need good design! Plus, if we have an item in stock, we will sell as few as 2 rolls of paper or 2 yards of fabric. Check out our inventory on our web-site at any time: http://www.twenty2.net/instock_fabric.html

Thanks again - Kyra Hartnett

Holly, I'm completely elated that you've included me amongst such amazing talent. I've been a textile designer for over 15 years, but always for someone else's vision. It's so liberating to be doing my own thing! So, thanks for the nod, it is truly a milestone for me. I also do home goods in another Etsy shop, which utilizes many of my designs printed on linen- stop in and take a look: http://cicadahome.etsy.com

This list is great, but unfortunately quite a few of the links don't work. Could they be repaired? I'd love to see them all! Thank you.

Also Silk Trading Company has great fabrics too. Downtown Los Angeles there is Home Fabrics on Wall St. - a huge great selection of fabrics there at much cheaper prices.

Thank you for sharing these! This is the bane of my life also! I am in Australia, so our market is even smaller. For example, I am struggling to find shirting fabric - good quality, pure cotton, stylish shirt material to make my own shirts. Do you think I can find any? No!
anyway, thanks again
