Inspiration
Paper Sculpture at Anthropologie
Posted on Jun 30, 2008 6:11:00 AM  |  By HollyBecker

Eloise Corr Danch is a Brooklyn-based artist in Brooklyn who wrote to me recently about a Paper Sculpture Installation called Paper Doll that she has up at the Rockefeller Center Anthropologie store Gallery in Midtown. I've heard of another exhibition held there recently by a French artist -- is this an ongoing gallery space now? If so, fantastic. An artist I was working with back in '05 and I chatted about this for hours -- that Anthropologie should have rotating exhibitions in their retail stores nationwide and dedicate one evening a month to a store opening party to kick off the exhibition. Perhaps this Midtown gallery is the start of something greater? I'd love to see that happen. Well that and an Anthropologie book showing how they create all the wonderful projects that they pull together for each of their retail stores.

I really liked seeing the invitation Eloise sent to me of a life-sized sculpture called Lady Dulcinea. I wish I could break away for a day to drive down to the city to view this in person. If you are able to check it out live, please do and let me know your thoughts. Lady Dulcinea is made entirely of paper with the exception of the corset, hoop wire frame, and embroidery work. Eloise created custom paper inspired by a 1750 German wallpaper design from Bavaria. The design is based on Austrian Baroque and Spanish design from that period. I love the blue and white, it reminds me of the Delft pottery that I love so much from the Netherlands.

I find three dimensional work of this size quite alluring and altogether impressive. It reminds me of one of my favorite London artists Susan Stockwell shown directly above. I first became aware of Susan from her Altered States exhibition in '06 at Studio Caparrelli in London. Susan works primarily with paper and designs paper sculptures using everything from coffee filters to tea bags and maps.

It is artists like Eloise and Susan who keep inspiring me, proving that there is so much to be excited by and how through using simple materials great things can be accomplished if one has vision, artistic talent, and of course follows through. If you think you've seen it all, like my grandmother always said, you're obviously not looking hard enough! So much greatness out there.

Stunning work, thank you Eloise for letting me and Real Simple readers know about this event!
