I received a press release for a beautiful Dorothy Draper dresser--the hefty price tag, $6,000. I immediately thought about how many months of rent I could pay with this loot, or how I could get both the dream sofa and bed that I've been eyeing, and still have a few hundred bucks left over. Things were just not adding up. Even with the dresser being as gorgeous as it is, there has to be a less expensive alternative, right? So as usual, my first reaction was to surf the web for an inexpensive look-a-like, that with only a few supplies I could turn into a similar stunner. I had no idea that I would stumble upon the exact dresser on Ebay for under $1,000 dollars. The Ebay price tag--$750 with two matching chairs, thrown in--and this is why Ebay and Craig's List are genius. Rather than splurging straight off the bat, do a little research, you never know what steals you'll stumble upon. What's your best Ebay or Craig's List find?
Posted by: Allison| June 11, 2008 at 02:46 PM I am an even bigger fan of Craigslist than I am eBay. I'm in the market for a Danish modern sideboard (two, actually). You can't find one on eBay for under $650, with shipping, forget it! But you do enough browsing through Craigslist, especially using an awesome tool like a Craigslist image preview, and you're bound to run into a family selling grandma's dining room set on the cheap. I've seen some Heywood Wakefield steals you wouldn't believe.... My husband (on Craigslist) :-) I love Craigslist too. When I first started my design service in '05, I found my clients on the Boston Craigslist, I placed an ad there. I also found an apt there once that I ended up renting. Oh and I've sold tons of furniture there as well. You get some weird people, but if you don't leave your personal email or phone number, you usually get only serious inquiries. A year ago, my husband and I moved from a one-bedroom apartment to our first home. I was finally going to have a dining room and was so excited. Our dining room is almost a perfect square, so a table that extended lengh-wise was not the best option. We found a great dark-stained teak table with chairs that expanded from a rectangle to a square with room for 2 chairs on each side for only $300 on Craig's List. I don't think I will ever buy furniture new again. Let someone else pay that premium! Wow you all have come across a lot of great finds! I'm still testing the waters with Craigslist but my husband did get us a great LCD TV on there. I totally agree with you Leslie! I in many instances I would prefer to buy furniture used and transform it to fit my liking anyway, so these are definitely great places to find that. What I do like about Ebay are the updates from my favorite sellers. |

My best online find was my sewing machine, which I bought through craigslist. It was $100 and came with the sewing desk (it fold out into a long surface or in to put away the machine) and everything in the 4 drawers AND it was delivered. It was even better for me because it was the exact model that my Mom has, so it was a machine with which I was already familiar. The machine alone was easily worth the $100.
