Fold Up Your Dinner Table

One of the hardest things about a small space is fitting in a dining table. With out the luxury of an eat-in-kitchen or a large living room my roommate and I normally end up eating on the sofa or at our desks (and breakfast in bed on the weekends).

A solution to this lack of space is a dining table that can be put away and then used for other things. My favorite option is from Tiny Living, a store in New York City run by a husband and wife team dedicated to living small.

This photo shows the table open, but when not in  use, all four chairs slip into the door in the middle and the leaves fold down. When you're not eating, it can be put up against a wall and used for a landing strip or slip behind the sofa as a lamp table.

My sister has a gorgeous teak version of this table that I've been scheming to steal ever since I moved into my own apartment. But I don't think she'll ever give it up.

What are some of your favorite furniture multi-taskers?

I have this table! I love it! I wish I had bought 2 when I finally got mine - I envied one for years - in my kitchen I had to choose between a table or a dishwasher as a permanent fixture.
Mine is rounded on the ends so it makes an Oval instead of a rectangle when popped up. I got mine at Aldi.
My X-MIL has one like in the picture that she drags out for holiday parties when the whole fam damily comes over.
I know they can be found in 2 finishes here

*Christina: Now I'm jealous that you have one too. Thanks for the hint on where to find it in a different finish. I love dark wood, and was thinking that if i bought it I would have to re-finish it. Great find, I'm going to add it to my wish list when I get an apartment of my own.

I love white, so my favorite is the Wing drop leaf table: http://tinyurl.com/5m9m5h

Kristin, you may as well be describing my life: I just finished my afternoon snack--sitting on the sofa, of course! All of these tables would be perfect solutions to my kitchen table-less life! Thank you!

I am not a massive lover of IKEA, but years ago I bought their gateleg (?) table. Mine did not have chairs, I opted for some mondian-style european cafe chairs instead. In my very small cottage, it worked out great. I used it next to the couch as a side table and pulled it out for dinner with a friend. I even pulled it outside on the patio on occasion and served up to 6, informally, if you can believe it. Mine had drawers on both sides, and I used it for linens and matches. Worked out great. Just needed to be tightened here and there. But for four years, I dined daily on it.

I think anything that offers storage as an option is a great thing. Many clients of mine are opting for the upholstered cube, usually in leather. It can be used as an ottoman, extra seating, or a coffee table with a tray on it (use two in this case). Stash extra linens, books, etc inside the cube!

*Tracey: I agree, anything with extra storage is a bonus when you're dealing with tight living quarters. The storage ottoman is a great solution.
