Cutting Through Design Blog Smog
Posted on Apr 18, 2008 8:04:00 AM  |  By HollyBecker

So many blogs, so little time. How does one cut through the blog smog to locate ones that fit their needs? As a blogger and a blog reader, you may be surprised to know that I read less than 10 blogs per day. In addition to Simply Stated of course. I scan many others to stay current, but that occurs less than once a week and takes me about an hour total.

990039189_ea477911df

A design blog article I wrote for a real estate journal back in 2006 pointing potential home buyers to some of my favorite reads on the web.

Why do I practice portion control when it comes to blog reading?

Mostly due to lack of time. Like so many of you, I have a life off-line that demands my attention in addition to my online responsibilities blogging at decor8 and here on Simply Stated. There are thousands of great blogs out there and more are joining the ranks each day, how could I ever keep up if I didn't exercise some self control? Maybe you feel the same.

I like to read blogs about decorating, art, do-it-yourself projects, and crafts because they encourage and inspire me since bloggers often share their process and progress. This motives me and often I walk away from something I read feeling totally pumped to start my own project. This is what keeps me coming back to blogs for more, it's a huge bonus in addition to the entertainment factor. If I walk away from a blog feeling like I Can Do It then I know I found the right fit for me, I'll keep reading again and again.

A lot of people ask me what I look for in decorating and craft blogs. Here are some questions I ask myself:

  • Does the blogger have their name and/or bio visible, or at least their email address? I want to know a little about this person! A bio gives me a way to connect to their world. When I surveyed readers on my own blog, many asked me to include a bio page because they wanted to know more about me. After adding a bio, my readership increased and many took time to express to me through email how much they valued the addition of my bio. Not everyone has to include one, I didn't at first, but what a difference it can make!
  • If the blog offers advice (on say, rewiring a lamp), do they have the credentials to do so? And when I say credentials, I don't mean they need to have some fancy background, I just want to know that if I try the same project I won't set my house on fire. :)
  • If they show photos on their blog, are they crediting their images giving the source full credit?
  • Is their content consistent?
  • Do they answer comments left on their blog?
  • Are comments made by fellow readers constructive to the discussion or are they overly negative?
  • And most of all, does the blog make me feel positive about myself and my life? Am I inspired? Or do I walk away in a bad mood?

I think all of these points are good to consider because you want to make sure that what you're taking in is worth your time.

My rule is that if I wouldn't consider having them as friends in my 'real' life, then I certainly don't want to associate with them online. Plus, it soaks up time that I could be spending on projects, exercising, or giving attention and care to my family -- my husband is precious and I never want him to take the back seat to over consumption when it comes to online recreation.

This is something I think everyone should consider. How much time are you spending reading blogs? Are they benefiting you in some way? Do you genuinely like the author? Is the message giving you feelings of hope or draining you? All valid things to consider.

I suggest making a list of your daily must-reads and sign up for their RSS feeds. That's what I do now and it really makes a difference in how I'm spending my time. Just as I wouldn't sit on the sofa for hours to watch television, reading blogs and surfing the net isn't something I do 24/7 either. There is such a thing as to much of a good thing. Whether it's cupcakes, sex, or blog reading, you can't do any of it constantly and not eventually tire out.

Of course, as my interests change, so does my list of must-read blogs for the day. I'll share my blog reading list with you on Monday.

If I didn't author a blog myself and write here for Simply Stated, I would read a lot more blogs than I do currently. Reading 10 or less daily works for me and I'm quite happy with it. Everyone is different of course so you read as many as you like -- do what works for you.

I'm also not walking away over-stimulated and frustrated each day from over consumption. I believe that the time you spend on every activity should be as good as you can possibly make it. Even a mundane shower should be fun -- wash with your favorite soap and listen to a great CD and sing your little heart out. If you are consuming too much information daily, try to curb things a bit, reel yourself in, make an honest assessment about your blog intake, and then do something to shorten your list of reads so that you're spending more time enjoying the blogs you love, commenting on them, and showing the author that you appreciate their hard work so the good blogs stick around and continue to thrive.

If you have any blog reading tips to share, or if you'd like to tell us what blogs you read daily, please comment below!

Hi

I'm not sure my suggestions for interior design blogs are good (all I read is decor8 really) but I have some other suggestions:

- The Sartorialist: http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com This is one of the most popular blogs there is, but it's so incredible anyone who hasn't heard of it should go on it.
- Scout Holiday: http://scout-holiday.com/blog Someone with fantastic taste I think, a fashion and much, much more blog and a fantastic source for photographers.
- Nee Naw: http://www.neenaw.co.uk Very, very unrelated to style or fashion, but a very sweet blog of an anonymous man who takes the phones for emergency ambulance calls in London. Temporarily closed at the moment, but the archives are well-written, often heartwarming accounts of 999 calls both good and bad... Has also taught me exactly what to do in an emergency!

I find blogs very rewarding...not only having one, but looking at others. I read about 50+ but many are not updated everyday. I think it can get a little out of hand, but Google Reader makes it easy to scan through and save items. Getting comments and interacting is very fun too! I think when my life starts to get more hectic this will not always be the case.

I've found the that blogs I read regularly, I want others to read, too. I've put links to them in the right-hand column of my blog! That way I can easily click on them when I'm updating my own ... and I can pass them along to one of my readers that might like them!

Holly, thanks for the tips. Reading ten blogs a day is something to aspire to! I am new to the design blogging sphere, and just discovered your blog today! Very inspiring!

Gosh, I subscribe to over 600 blogs on Bloglines, I just skim them there! I like to keep track of what's new on other food blogs so I am not accidentally posting something too similar.

Interesting topic. It is very easy to get sucked into "blogging", if we're not careful with our time.

Posted by: Shalom| April 18, 2008 at 01:52 PM

I also use Bloglines to quickly read new posts, and I try to be a little ruthless about cutting the ones that don't consistently make me go "wow!" I rely on my daily favorites (decor8 among them) to report on all the cool topics for me, instead of me taking time to find them. Also, if there is a hot product/ person/ trend, many blogs report on that same thing, so there is some repetition that can be reduced. The only downside of Bloglines is sometimes missing the beauty of the blog designs themselves!

I am new to the blogging world, but have been decorating homes for many years! I like the idea of such a large network and "think tank" to keep me current in the decor world. Blogging and surfing may replace my glossy magazine addiction!

I skip around. I have my favorite blogs, but I also love to visit others' blogrolls in order to find new blogs, that's lots of fun. I usually do it in spurts, sometimes a quick look through, sometimes in a bigger block of time. It's all good and usually all very enjoyable. Good post.

This is so true. I get overwhelmed as well and really only have about 5 that I read consistently. Sometimes i will take a few hours a week and check out what is new but usually I stick with my blogger "friends."

Funny, I've just been realizing I need to set a definite time limit on my blog reading because otherwise I get overloaded with information!

I have a lot of subscriptions on google reader, but I've realized there are only a few blogs I like to read all the time and the rest I mostly just scan for interesting things as they are updated. This helps keep my reading under an hour a day.

My must-read list is quite short and includes http://www.decor8.blogspot.com/ (the first blog I ever started reading! :)), and http://designformankind.blogspot.com/, and then some of my other favorites are http://www.smosch.com, http://www.designspongeonline.com/, http://creaturecomforts.typepad.com/my_weblog/, http://www.apartmenttherapy.com, http://www.hearthandmadeblog.com/, and then there are quite a few more that I just visit once in a while, like thesartorialist, etc.

Good tips!

Great post -- and very timely for me. I just started a blog a couple of weeks ago to chronicle my first home. My inspiration was the blogs (c. 20) that I skim on a regular basis...I found them when my boyfriend and I bought our house a couple of months ago. (which is also how I found decorat8.). I agree with the comment by Betsy -- one of the perks of having a blog is the links I post on my right-hand column that enable me to check in on a regular basis. Our house has become a home (Cliché. I know.) thanks to some of the ideas I found on blogs. Thanks for the tips on making mine better!

wow, virginia!
thanks for including my little 'ol blog on your reading list. it's nothing but pure enjoyment for me--where i post anything and everything that inspires me; and of course, my knitting.

i agree with the points made above about blog reading and choosing only a few that truly speak to you. otherwise, one could spend all day reading them and getting over-stimulated!

I like the simple yet sensible suggestions for optimising not only our blog-reading time but daily life, in this article. I'd like to point readers towards a relatively new but brilliant design blog from India is http://anindiansummer-design.blogspot.com. Little is known about Indian and South Asian design across the Western world except the banal imports of mass-consumerism and stereotypes of mass media, and this blog cuts through these to showcase the stunning (and what some may call 'alternative') design from South Asia and the Indian subcontinent. The writer has also recently launched an online 'bazaar', where some absolutely stunning artefacts encompassing both traditional and contemporary design and for sale.

Thanks for the reminder.

I keep my favorite reads in Bloglines and a massive folder of links that I sometimes like to browse. I ditched about 30 blogs this past weekend that I found I wasn't reading anymore. I'm down to a managable 50 or so.

Posted by: Janel| April 21, 2008 at 11:48 AM

Great tips! I feel overwhelmed by all the amazing blogs out there, and feel so guilty when I stop checking into a favourite because time has become too tight.

i don't have my full name to protect my family's privacy + i never show any of our pictures, but i enjoy seeing other bloggers pictures + knowing their names

hi...i'm a new blogger learning the ropes. thanks for this insight.

reading blogs is like walking into a fantasy land--total overstimulation & scatterdom!
i feel like a squirrel in a tree, hoping from branch to branch, collecting nuts.
a couple of times, in my excitement, i space out on getting the info to credit a source. i am learning to be fastidious about this though.

if i can add some advice to all bloggers, new & old--have the sites you link to, open in another window. when i'm looking over a post, i like to open up the sites i'm interested in for later, but want to stay with the original site until i'm done. it's so frustrating to go from a post, to a link, to another link and then all of a sudden, have lost the original blog. sigh.

too much candy out there in the world...

anyway, thanks!

Bookmarking no more than 10 works for us, too. We read pretty much the same blogs and then discuss great advice on time management. We update our list as we find new blogs we prefer over others so the list is ever evolving, but we are loyal to our core blogs.
