Hardware: Locating Hot Knobs and Pretty Pulls
Posted on Mar 10, 2008 7:00:00 AM  |  By HollyBecker

What's the perfect way to spruce up cabinetry and furniture? Knobs and pulls, baby! Terrific hardware is where it's at, especially if you're in the mood for a fast, inexpensive way to breathe new life into a tired piece. Would you like to know where I shop for hardware? I'm so glad you've asked! Come on, let's go shopping.

Okay, I hope I'm not insulting you by saying this, but you know to check stock over at your local hardware mega stores, like Lowes, Home Depot, and the Expo Design Center, right? If styles seem a bit generic for your taste then give Anthropologie, Target, or Restoration Hardware a try both online and in-store. Make sure to visit their retail stores if you happen to have one nearby as they tend to carry a more extensive selection, especially when it comes to Anthropologie. Their inventory greatly varies by store. Our Burlington, MA Anthro carries way more hardware than the one in downtown Boston. And yes I admit, someone who knows things like this is a bit of a design geek -- I stalk stores pretty regularly to ensure that I don't miss a trick.

Additional Resources for New Hardware:

  • eBay - Search: hardware, then narrow results from there.
  • Bauerware either online or if visiting San Francisco, hit up their storefront located at 3886 17th Street in San Francisco (415-864-3886) . In addition to contemporary knobs, they stock lots for children as well as some great vintage ones from the 1930's.

In addition to new hardware, hit up your local architectural salvage stores, too. I call these places the real gems, they're where you get the good stuff. Architectural Salvage in San Diego, Pinch of the Past in Savannah, Architectural Artifacts in Chicago, Rejuvenation Hardware both online and in Seattle and Portland and for my New England-based friends, Architectural Salvage in Burlington, Vermont -- it's a personal favorite of mine. You can also find vintage hardware online, most also carry a good selection of reproduction pieces too. Here's a few good finds for...

Since I have very little funds but big aspirations, this low price knobs website is my favorite. I replaced every knob in my very dated kitchen with chrome knobs I purchased from D. Lawless Hardware and couldn't be happier with the product and service. Highly recommended.

I love this post!! I was racking my brain for knob and pull places about a year ago when I decided to use my dad's tiny old desk from grade school in my proportionally tiny apartment. I ended up finding the most adorable knobs *on sale* at Anthropologie. The desk went from "old and beat up" to "vintage and distressed" in a matter of minutes. Similarly, I took an old coat rack with wooden pegs and swapped them with a selection of eclectic hooks (courtesy of Target and Anthropologie)--now the only problem is I hate to hang my coats on it because it covers up the pretty hooks! Thanks for sharing the great websites... My wheels are turning thinking of what I might makeover next!

Hi Kayla, Nicole, and Lauren! Thank you for saying hello and leaving your comments.
Nicole all of the hardware shown is from anthropologie. The one you've got your eye on is called
the rosy knob and it's available in 7 colors, including the great blue shown here. The link is below (click on hardware); it's $6 per knob.

I started up Papilio as a small company carrying a BIG collection of knobs, pulls and handles because I couldn't find anything I liked when we revamped our kitchen cabinets. Two years on and we like to think we have a great range from handglazed ceramic, recycled bottle glass, natural seashell and rstored vintage glass and brass. Why not have a peek at www.papilio.co.uk. We offer a free sampling service if you are trying to match colours and need to try before you buy. Our ceramic knobs, pulls and handles come in over 50 different glorious colour glazes. if you really can't find the right colour for you we may be able to design one just for you. We ship wordwide.

For Australians, Spotlight sells them (a massive craft store). They are a bit expensive, but I was going to get two for my work desk next time I visit.

I fell in love with the anthropology magnifying glass flower knobs (the second one in on the first picture) and am searching for more. Any ideas on where I can go for out of stock purchases like this one?
