Do You Test Your Party Recipes?

350111I am co-hosting a baby shower this weekend and am looking for a delicious baked pasta recipe that's also portable (and that I can hopefuly make ahead of time). I'm sick of all my standbys and I wanted something a little more special so I was considering this recipe from Bon Appetit magazine: Cheesy Baked Penne with Cauliflower and Crème Fraîche.

It seems like an interesting update on traditional mac and cheese, and the reviews are mostly positive, but I always get nervous making a new dish for a party without trying it ahead of time. What if it's just not that good? And, some of these ingredients look pretty pricey so I don't really have the time or the budget to make it twice between now and Friday. What do you think? Should I just go for it?

Just go for it! I never test out recipes and things always turn out fine.

Depends....I have experimented many a time on my husband. Heck I have even experimented on my In Laws for a Sunday dinner! They always turn out good. Sure I make some minor alterations the next time I cook but everything has turned out beyond edible I would even qualify them as good but I always make minor adjustments. If you are generally a good cook then you have nothing to worry about.

Tough call. I've had it work out fine and be a complete disaster.

Had an open house party last Christmas. 3/4 of my new dishes came out great. The other 1/4 just so-so and maybe a little disappointing. I don't think I would go w/ a new dish that has really expensive ingredients for a party that will have guests who may not understand all your efforts that didn't turn out so great. I didn't know all of the guests at our open house (some of them were friends and family of my boyfriend that I hadn't met yet) and would have liked to impress more w/ my cooking.

I'd go with mostly tried and true dishes that are likely to impress and one (maybe 2) that are new and you're not sure of. Best of luck with the shower,

Shan

Does anyone have a great Enchilada Soup Recipe that I could make in the crock pot? Thanks!

i usually test recipes out on my coworkers before making them for a crowd! after 3 years, they get excited when i tell them i am testing a new recipe, and i don't have to eat the same food over and over ...
