Do Girl Scout Cookies Really Taste That Good?

I have a confession: I don't love girl scout cookies. Saying it out loud feels slightly dangerous, since people tend to talk about the cookies with the same fervent adoration they reserve for their pets and children. But as another round of cookie sales in our building cafeteria has come to a close, I'm coming clean. Yes, if I had a box of Thin Mints or Tagalongs in front of me at my desk I could easily eat half of it—but I could pretty much say the same about Oreos or any other chocolatey store-bought cookie. I wish I could pretend my ambivalence is based on principle: It's not great that a group devoted to girls' well-being would use palm oil in its products. (The organization says it is working on resolving the issue.) But really, my feelings are largely due to the fact that I grew up in New York City. Not only was I not a girl scout, I didn't know any.

So like oysters and olives, I think of the sweets as an acquired taste. They have yet to make it onto my top ten list of life's great foods. I know many people will disagree with me. When Kristin, Real Simple's Managing Editor, blogged about turning a Brownie away after her husband had bought 11 boxes of cookies the weekend before, she got a record number of comments. But I can't imagine I am the only one in the world with a take-it-or-leave-it attitude about their gastronomic merits. Or am I?

Do you like Girl Scout Cookies? What are your favorite flavors?

I cannot live without Samoas (those decadent chocolate-and-coconut ones), despite their disturbing ingredient list, and the fact that on more than one occasion, I have slipped and called them Samoans...as in, the inhabitants of a certain group of islands in the South Pacific. I was once corrected on that by a third-grader in pigtails, which was a bit mortifying.

I love love love Tagalongs. It's the chocolate-peanut butter combo that has me weak in the knees.

I come from a long line of Girl Scouts, so their place in my household was established early. My parents would buy a TON of Thin Mints and freeze them and dole them out for special occasions. However, since I started eating healthier I steer clear of cookies in general even if they support the girls (I am a volunteer assistant Brownie troop leader too) I will buy my boyfriend A BOX, and then donate for Operation Thin Mint. I would rather the troops get them than have me pack on the pounds.

I, too, am not a fan of Girl Scout cookies. I will buy a box every once in a while, though, because sometimes those girls are too adorable to say "no" to.

My husband is addicted to Thin Mints -- it's a special treat for him to freeze a few boxes and eat them after cookie time is over. But I've never developed a taste for them either. If I have to eat a GS cookie, I'd probably pick a shortbread, but I'd rather have an Oreo anyday.

to answer the question of your post...NO! :) I'm so with you. I always THINK they're going to be amazing, and I'm always disappointed. you're not alone... :)

I don't get it. Nowhere on wikipedia nor the given link to the FAQ on girl scout cookies mention the problem with tropical oils.
In fact, wikipedia says its good for you, ingested or applied to a cut or a wound like iodine. Sounds pretty versatile and A.O.K. to me.

Keebler makes their own version of thin mints & tagalongs. They are just as tasty & they are cheaper! Plus you can get them year round!!

I love the Samoas and thank goodness they don't come out that often, they are pure heaven in a cookie and hell on the waistline! Thin Mints used to be my favs from back in the day as a GS but they have changed and have become more waxy. That doesn't stop me from buying a box as they are my DH's favorites and we freeze them. The other good ones are the oatmeal peanut butter ones. Ok I am pretty much a sucker for GS cookies.

Like jane maynard, I'm always disappointed when I bite into a GS cookie. Perhaps if you grew up with them in your house, you're more likely to like them? They were never around my house; we had Oreos and Chips Ahoy.

Actually I used to be a girl scout, peddling the things off in my childhood to help pay for activities and supplies. I used to love them, especially the shortbread trefoils and the peanut butter patties. Thing is, they've definitely changed over the years. They're smaller, and they're not nearly as good as they used to be. I bought two boxes from a girl at the college I go to helping out her little troop last year, and I never even bothered to finish either box. I don't know what happened. I did try the new cinnamon swirl things and those ARE good. It's just painfully annoying that they're in those stupid little '100 calorie' packets so you get even less.

GS cookies are not that good. But honestly, I don't think turkey is either. What makes them special is that they only come out once a year. It's all about the hype.

I like Girl Scout cookies, but I'm not a fanatic. The point is that buying a box of GS cookies is -- in part -- a donation to a charitable organization that helps girls build courage, confidence, and character, so they can become resourceful citizens and strong women. The cookie sale itself is an activity that teaches girls basic business skills. So, even if you don't love them, buy a box and donate them to a friend or a food shelter. It's hard to dislike GS cookies when the purpose of the product is such an important one.

Love me some THIN MINTS!

Yippee! I'm not the only one! I also don't get the fascination of the GS cookie. There are so many other yummy treats out there that are worth the extra calories. Honestly, I dread GS cookie season. I don't want to be unsupportive of the GS, but I just don't enjoy the cookies. I'd rather give the cute little girls the money and they can save their cookies.

By the way........I'm from NYC too. I wonder if that has something to do with it.....although I was a Brownie for a year and I do like brownies. If GS sell brownies, well, NOW we're talking.

Mmm, GS cookies.....
They are an annual treat I look forward to each year. Not only are they tasty, but I'm supporting a great organization. Calories be danged, they are good right out of the box, frozen or crumbled over ice cream.
The nostalgia is there too. I dragged my wagon all over the neighborhood delivering those boxes, seeing smiles at every house and more than once, being stopped by someone in a car wanting to buy a box. (nevermind today's stranger danger)
