Admittedly, it's not as bad this time of year as, say, Thanksgiving or Christmas. Yet as I sit in a generic sportsbar at JFK airport in New York, awaiting a flight to Florida which is (seemingly) infinitely delayed, I can't help but struggle to remember why on earth I thought it was a good idea to try to FLY somewhere for Labor Day Weekend??
Indefinite airport delay is certainly one of the more cruel tortures modern society has devised. As of now my 9pm Flight has been delayed until 1am, putting me at my destination at 4am.
It takes a strong will, patient resolve, and an impossibly optimistic attitue to find the good in situations such as this.
But alas, here goes.
The Top 5 Things I'm Grateful For When Stranded in an Airport:
1. Sportsbars - I'm not usually a huge fan (screeming masses, dirty floors, stale peanuts), but having 6 TV screens in front of you allows one to follow the DNC, US Open, and Jets Game all at once. I couldn't do that if I were sitting in the comfort of my own home.
2. WiFi - sure I've been on my computer at work all day, but there is something comforting about the fact that I'm able to make good use of this time and knock out some more to-dos so they're not nagging me tomorrow at the beach (so says the eternal do-er in me...)
3. Greasy Food - A good cheeseburger and french fries goes a long way to lift the spirits. You're allowed to eat whatever the heck you want while stranded in an airport. Everyone knows that, right? I just might have dessert.
4. Kind Strangers - when you live in a city that can often seem too fast, too harsh, and too impersonal, there's a comfort that comes with the comraderie that inevitably follows news of a shared misery. Ie: we're all stuck here, we all just want to get where we're going, let's gripe to each other and have a good laugh. I've already made friends with 3 strangers. And the night is young.
5. Comfortable pants - it's times like these you're glad you didn't reach for the really fitted jeans today.
That's all I got. Wish me luck! And for heaven's sake, if you're traveling this weekend, WALK there.
