Behind the Scenes
Bringing a Real Simple Room to Life
Posted on May 13, 2008 5:47:30 PM  |  By KateParker

I am happy to report that the Fourth Annual Design on a Dime, presented by Real Simple, was a smashing success on all fronts.

Thirty top interior designers created unique, gorgeous rooms, and all of the items in those rooms were sold (at up to 80% off) to benefit Housing Works, the nation's largest grassroots AIDS service organization. Plus, we hosted a rockin' kickoff party, complete with mini-burgers, a silent auction, cute bartenders, and a red carpet!

Real Simple Home and Style editors, including Yours Truly, pulled together to create one of the rooms on display. Our inspiration was a comfortable, feminine Home Office that is at once functional, welcoming, and stylish. Here's a behind the scenes peek at how a Real Simple room is born!

Three white walls - a daunting challenge.

The walls are painted, and two rugs are put down for a nice layering effect.

The furniture arrives.

The fun begins - hours of unpacking ahead of us!

Getting the large items in place - and making sure they fit - is a crucial step.

A layout we love.

Time to start adding all those smaller, decorative items that give the room its personality.

Things get messy before they get better...

Ahh...the finished bookshelves...

...and an inviting workspace! Plus a nook in which to get quite cozy.

The crew kicks back after a hard day's work...

...and then gets all dolled up for the big bash. Time to celebrate!

Have a question about any of the items in the room above? Speak up! I'd love to hear your thoughts on our design.

I love this room design! My favorite part about the room is that it feels so feminine and chic because of the soft colors and yet it looks so clean and streamlined. I think a lot of times 'feminine' and 'chic' can end up looking cluttery or too shabby chic-ish. I love the modern twist on this soft room. Gorgeous job. By the way, where are the shelves from?

I love it! If only mine looked as good...

Who wouldn't want to get to work in a space like this? If only my corporate office was so inviting... This is amazing, Kate, amazing!

I love this room! I was wondering who makes the floor lamp?

I adore this office! Who makes the desk and the floor lamp?

Posted by: Allie| August 23, 2008 at 02:29 PM

I am dying to know who makes this desk! Does anyone know???

Posted by: Allie| August 27, 2008 at 10:58 AM

Allie - SO sorry for the delayed response. I adore the desk as well, and it's made by Williams Sonoma Home, a gorgeous line of furniture.

You can get it here: http://www.wshome.com/products/p236/index.cfm?pkey=cfurdsk.

The floor lamp is the Rutledge Lamp from Arteriors (www.arteriorshome.com) and it's priced at $659. Definitely an investment peice, but one you could enjoy for years to come.

The bookshelves are the Parson Towers from West Elm (www.westelm.com) and
they are priced at $499.00 each. We painted them white, which took a lot less time than you might imagine.

The Olivia Sofette is from Pottery Barn's custom upholstered line, in the Green Tile Print Fabric. Here: http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p10927/index.cfm?pkey=xsrd0m1|20|||0|||||||sofette&cm_src=SCH

I hope that is helpful!
