Get Creative With The Granimator App!

If you love art and have an iPad or iPhone you’re going to love me in about 5 seconds! Maybe this should be over in the Technology blog on Simply Stated but I cannot resist talking about the Granimator here because I figure creatives read decorating blogs and naturally are interested in anything that even remotely has to do with artistic things, am I right? But yes, the Granimator. The huh? No, this isn’t something that you expect…

Simplicity in Naming Children?

My name is a fairly common name for someone of my generation. Usually, the only time someone gets my name wrong is if I don’t enunciate very well and the person I’m speaking with thinks I’ve said my name is Karen or Ellen. Every once in awhile I might get mail addressed to Aaron, but I understand that confusion since Aaron was an even more popular boy name when I was born. With a common name like Erin, though, people usually get it right when communicating with me.

My friend Krystal has the exact opposite experience. She gets mail addressed to Crystal almost every day. Additionally, she has a last name of Polish decent, which is riddled with Ks, Vs, and Is. When she and her husband decided to have children, they joked about changing their last name to Smith, simply to make it easier on the kids (they didn’t).

Wire Frame Lampshade Trend

Have you noticed an emerging wire lampshade trend? I’ve been living in Europe for nearly two years now and definitely see it as a trend over here but what about there in the states? You’ll have to comment and let me know… but I’ve spotted lots of wire frame lampshades being used in home decorating more and more – even in the Australian magazines that I read. Here are some examples of what I’m talking about… After you’ve checked out my selections below, please let me know if you love or hate them (or somewhere in between!).

Do You Shop Online Sample Sales for Home Decor?

Fashion companies kicked off the craze of online sample sale shopping (hello, Gilt Groupe!), but the brands that make decor weren’t far behind. And now it seems like there are a million sites out there that promise the best home goods without the designer prices.

Making a Plan for Your Summer

Summer is coming, at least for those of us in the northern hemisphere, and taking the time to plan now will help you fit everything in you want to do. Here is a simple plan to make your fun-in-the-sun plans possible:

  1. Make a list. Start your summer planning process by creating a list of all the fun things you (and your family and friends) want to do. Do you want to go to the beach a couple times? Do you want to go to the pool at least three times a week? Do you want to go camping? Put all of your great ideas on your list.

Skip the Chemicals to Clean Your Shower Doors

Keeping your shower doors soap scum-free is one of the biggest bathroom cleaning challenges. Luckily, you don’t have to reach for the chemicals in order to keep them clean. Instead try two common household items—a dryer sheet and lemon oil.

Air-Dry Your Clothes to Save Energy and Prevent Shrinking

Many clothing labels recommend air-drying in order to prevent shrinking or damage to delicate fabrics. But skipping the dryer is an easy way to save energy as well. According to calculations done on TerraPass’s blog by air-drying just half of your loads of laundry you can save about $64 in energy costs and conserve more than 1,000 pounds of CO2.

What is Your Favorite Way to Reuse Plastic Bags?

The plastic bag is the MVP of multitaskers here at Real Simple. We’ve used them for everything from funnels to packing materials to knee pads. (Yes, that last one might qualify for the what-were-we-thinking category.)
