Lipstick Or Lip Gloss: Which Do You Wear?
Posted on Feb 11, 2009 9:26:24 AM  |  By MichelleMadhok

Sure, part of this debate is split along age lines: very young faces (lets count runway models out for the sake of argument) look a little silly with matte, vamp-y lips, and glossy shimmer can highlight fine lines in older skin. But for all of us in between, it’s theoretically a toss-up.

I tend to be partial to lipstick because it stays on longer, but there’s another caveat: if you want bright, vivid, saturated color, it doesn’t usually come with gloss alone. But lipstick doesn't come in 23 fun flavors.

Lipstickgroupshot Lipstick_gloss

Makeup artist Michael Marcus created his lipsticks ($24 each at Michael Marcus) to cater to women who crave lots of color. The line includes eye-catching shades like Dawn (sunrise orange) and Flirt (cotton-candy pink), and they're comfortably creamy, not flat or matte.

If a swipe of mostly-see-through gloss is more your style, try a Philosophy flavored lip shine ($12 at Philosophy): they’re shiny, emollient, smell like what they claim to smell like...and are currently available in 23 flavors.

So, which one would you lean towards – are you a lipstick lady or a gloss devotee?

I carry 2 shades of ipstick but I put on a bit of lip balm before putting on the lipstick so it's not as heavy. Not a fan of gloss but I want a sheer look.

I was a committed lipstick wearer until this year, when I switched over to gloss. True, lipstick stays on a little longer, but I still had to reapply it often. With lip gloss, I just keep it at my desk and apply it as often as necessary. No mirror needed, plus it acts as a moisturizer tinted with color.

I never wear lipstick. I occasionally wear lip gloss but my go-to is Burt's Bees Lip Balm.

It's all about the lip gloss! I always flavored chapstick in my pocket and lip gloss in my purse. I never liked the way lipstick smelled or tasted (and you know a little bit always ends up getting tasted), so I stuck with lip gloss and it's cousin chapstick- then you'll never have chapped lips. Can't say the same for lipstick.

I use them all! Chubby pencil sticks. Glosses (thick and thin), balms, lipsticks, etc. I carry a minimum of 25 options every day. I love options!

I'm with Kristin on this. I am 56 and the one thing I go to for a spot of color is my lip colors. Bought on sale, they are cheap enough to buy any shade, gloss or matte for each mood.

I have favored glosses for a long time, but recently switched over to lipstick. Some of the newer ones in the department store lines are as light & moisturizing as a gloss but deliver more saturated colors. My newest acquisition is a bold, almost cranberry red that really gives me a polished look for work. Of course I still wear my favorite mocha lip gloss, but on weekends when I want to look less 'done.'

Gloss. I was never a huge lipstick person. It takes more effort to put on. Gloss is more moisturizing than lipstick.

I always prefer lip gloss over lipstick. I only use lipstick when I am going to a party or any event. I would surely like to try out Philosophy flavored lip shine. :D
