A few "helpful" things that I'd rather just skip, actually: --lowfat muffins --telephone solicitations --people who break bad news gently --online surveys --ATM receipts --packing peanuts --department store credit cards --emails from PR people who clearly have never read a single issue of Real Simple and are promoting things we would never cover, like sex toys and American Idol winners --short escalators --frozen yogurt

So, like much of America I was glued to the tv on Tuesday. I was in my office so I suppose I was "working," but what I was really doing was: --trying to figure out why both senior Bushes wore purple, and was George really wearing a turtleneck? --wondering when Hillary will ever stop wearing that color --trying to figure out the mechanics of Michelle's outfit, specifically the ties and the thing that appeared to be a scarf --and was she wearing stockings? --and could Jill Biden be any cuter? --and why was Jill's Oprah outfit so much more wonderful...

Finally, a room of one's own

Once upon a time I went to graduate school to get my master's degree in English. It was not a particularly happy time in my life: my boyfriend (now husband) lived in another city and so when I wasn't pining for him I was with him on the weekend and dreading our Sunday afternoon parting. Then there was the fact that I seemed to be the only girl in my grad school class who shaved her legs or wore lipstick, which *definitely* was not on the application form. (Think Legally Blonde in New York City, without the little dog.) But...

I’ve been thinking a lot about these two words as our lives continue to be redefined economically, politically, you name it. Of the two, which do you crave more? For me it seems to change day by day, depending on how much sleep I got the night before, whether I had time to go to the gym, and how messy my sons’ bedrooms are. Like millions of Americans, I listened to both McCain’s and Obama’s speeches on Tuesday night with complete focus; not since Jim kissed Pam at the end of season two of The Office have I been so interested in a television event. What a night! There are many things to remember from Obama’s speech, but the detail that sticks in my head, of course, is the fact that Sasha and Malia now get a puppy. And so: it is with great enthusiasm that I recommend the Obamas borrow my dog for a perfect First Pet. As long as my family continues...

Help! Flies in the Kitchen.

There is a small-but-big, disgusting and completely new problem that has taken flight—literally—in our house over the past two weeks. I’m talking about flies. Now, I live in a household that does contain one or two people who just refuse to close the door. I swear half the time I am home on the weekends is spent bellowing, “Close the door!” We won’t even get into the fact that an open door means certain death of either dog or Baby because we’ve got a fairly busy street in front and a pool in back. Impossible to answer, right? This is the question that was posed to me last night by Middle. It was Eat With Your Family Night, and as luck would have it there was no work or soccer or board meetings or ultimate frisbee to interfere with our little family's ability to spend an ideal-sounding-but-actually-fairly-stressful meal together on the little banquette in our kitchen.
