Observations
Really, the only antidote to Halloween
Posted on Nov 3, 2008 2:39:00 PM  |  By KristinVanOgtrop

I have written on this blog before about how much I hate Halloween.  Now, with one more Halloween under my belt, I can say with confidence that I still hate it as much as I always have, if not a bit more.  (Why more?  Well, this year to add to the excitement I sliced my finger making chili and had to call my husband home from work because I thought I had to go to the emergency room.  Whee!).

One huge benefit of having a toddler is that you have an enforced curfew, which meant that on Halloween I was in my pajamas by 9 p.m.  Heaven!  My sister-in-law was visiting and we parked ourselves on the sofa and watched The Bodyguard, which I have seen maybe 10 times and do not like any less than I did the first time I saw it, even though the love scene is completely unsatisfying and Whitney Houston is now such a mess.

But it got me thinking:  there are just some days—and, hello, Halloween tops the list—when there is no better cure than a giant glass of wine and a certain kind of movie.  Of which The Bodyguard is in my top five.  The other four:

The Cutting Edge
The Notebook
Bridget Jones’s Diary
Pride and Prejudice, the 6-hour BBC version

And yes, on more than one occasion I have watched the entire P&P in one sitting.  But I save that for days that are even more stressful than Halloween.  Luckily, they don’t come around very often.

Something's Gotta Give
Pride & Prejudice (the Keira Knightley one)
Clueless
Bridget Jones' Diary (1 & 2)

And right now, I have to add - I'm absolutely dreaming of a day when I can get my hands on a big chunk of time and the DVD's of Anne of Green Gables - the PBS version. I want to veg out for a weekend with apple cider & pie and watch it from start to finish. Anne of Avonlea, too!

Oh my gosh, I thought I was the only person alive who both hated Halloween and loved The Cutting Edge. Now I know I'm not alone!! :)

Caroline, you are so not alone, and I have to point out that many of the movies on these lists are in the same genre as The Cutting Edge--that is, many of them are "they hate each other but they really love each other!" movies. Which happens to be one of my favorite genres.

You feel about Halloween the way I feel about New Year's Eve. Way too much buildup and work for one night. Much to my husband's dismay, I prefer to curl up and watch a movie and drink a glass or two of wine. My favorites for that kind of night are Notting Hill, You've Got Mail and When Harry Met Sally. I also have a movie reserve for when I don't feel well and can't sleep: Pride and Prejudice (PBS version) and I love, love, love Anne of Green Gables (PBS version). There is something so comforting about all of them.

I'm thrilled to see there are others that view Halloween the same way I do, and love The Cutting Edge! I, too, thought I was alone in those sentiments.

The Wizard of Oz

Grease
All right! I HAVE to make time for Pride and Prejudice :) (Maybe after College football season is over!)

Though I love Halloween, I also love the outstanding diversions you amazing women have come up with. You've said it all. I'll just save this particular blog for times when I need diversion from something I hate - like waiting for my teen(s) to come home from a night out. Motherhood ain't for sissies.

Okay, so this has nothing to do with Halloween exactly...except that I don't like Halloween because my kids get all tanked up on sugar. And it made me wonder if Kristin had ever visited raw-food-for-families.com? It is a site with ideas and tips to help families get more fruits and vegetables into their diet...in a whole state.
You should take a look...and at least Thanksgiving and Christmas are around the corner!

Many of my favorite movies have already been listed, but there's one that hasn't been mentioned yet - Father of the Bride (both the original and the Steve Martin version). I've watched both dozens of times & they always makes me cry.

RE: Halloween, my local dentist's office started a campaign a couple years ago - they ask kids to bring in their buckets of candy, which will be mailed to the soldiers in Iraq. In return, the kids receive a free toothbrush, toothpaste and a couple gift certificates to local restaurants. A nice way to get rid of all the unnecessary candy in the house and teach the kids about giving at the same time!

Halloween is better than Christmas for me, seriously. But, I'm fairly certain that my mother is at fault for it; she always went all out. Our Halloween decor was unmatched, and my costume always took the whole month to make. The whole thing gives me warm fuzzies to think about. I tried to replicate it a few times, but it's never really the same. Although, I can say without pause that Halloween in New York is not so fun. Too many people, and the streets turn into one-way pedestrian mobs with angry-face police. Ick. I'm totally bailing on NY next year. That said:

Garden State
Almost Famous
Dan in Real Life
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

...and my boxed set of every season of Gilmore Girls.
