Observations
Why I Should Be the Governor of New York...
Posted on Mar 26, 2008 2:00:59 PM  |  By KristinVanOgtrop

...And you probably should be too. Why? Because we should all have so much free time.

For anyone who hasn't been under a rock for the last two weeks, in New York we have entered a disturbing new phase of state history that you might call the era of Governors With Too Much Time on Their Hands, Apparently. Between Eliot Spitzer travelling around to have sex with prostitutes and now David Paterson having all sorts of extra-marital affairs, you just have to ask: don't these guys have anything else to do?

Let's pause for a brief look at the things I have not done this week due to lack of time:

  • called the painter to find out when he's ever going to show up
  • ordered an iron skillet for my sister's birthday
  • put away the candles shaped like eggs that have been on the dining room table since Easter
  • called Visa to try to sort out once and for all the charges that appeared on my card after it was stolen
  • hand washed the sweater that I wore on my business trip last week
  • called two women I may want to hire at Real Simple
  • screwed in the screw that fell out of the kitchen chair
  • thrown away the petrified limes that I spied this morning in the fridge
  • emptied the overflowing recycling bin

Now, apparently I do have extra time on my hands since I sat on the sofa last night and watched half an hour of The Bourne Ultimatum with Eldest, who is still on Easter break. But to think: instead of using my free time to watch Matt Damon chase people and shoot at them on screen, I could either be a) running an entire state or b) having an affair of my own. Or maybe just getting an extra half an hour of sleep. Now *that* would be thrilling.

I'd take Matt Damon in Bourne over running a state any day of the week!

(I might even take him over an extra 1/2 hour of sleep!)

This is why I love reading your blog, Kristin, because it makes me feel normal. I'm not the only one with something old in the fridge, avoiding to sew a button back on my husbands khakis and choosing to get up early this morning to knit instead of be productive.

    Happy Wednesday everyone.

Amen and amen! This really resonated with me, as did your post about the not-exactly-equitable to-do lists of you and your husband. :) Love this blog!

Kristin, I've got good news and bad news:
The good news is, I have applied for the Real Simple job of which you speak, and besides my other qualifications, I happen to be an expert "iron skillet orderer for sisters' birthdays".
The bad news is, if I was not one of the original two who you were going to call about said job, then I have just added one more thing to your "too-busy-to-do" list.

This is how I know I am not fit for public office, because if I had time for an affair, I would use it to go to the gym or clean out the basement.

Ah, yes, and the sad thing is, you know Mr Spitzer's wife is in the same boat as all of us (to a certain extent), and SHE had to take time out of her no doubt busy schedule to stand with him when he abdicated the throne..
I hope she's making it through these days with her 3 lovely daughters.

My own neglected list of things to do:
Call our Health Savings Account to find out what the balance is
Write a card to my grandmother to let her know I'm thinking of her
Figure out what my skin tone is and paint my nails a complimentary shade of neutral
Dust the dashboard of my car
Write and illustrate a book for my nephew
    Memorize scripture
Do a quadriceps workout (bathing suit season is around the corner!)
Write a love note to my amazing husband

*whew* I don't know when people find time to have an affair! But they say it's birthed from boredom, so I have to thank God that I'm never bored!

Oh ... that reminds me ... I need to put OUR egg-shaped candle (along with all the other Easter decor) away!

Posted by: Kelly H-Y| March 27, 2008 at 05:06 PM

I never even got the Easter decorations out this year! Too busy. I thought about it last Saturday and then decided I would rather entertain with a few tulips and daffodils around than put the bunnies all away. As long as I got out the Easter baskets, no one seemed to mind. By the way, how do you apply for a job at Real Simple?

I only work a couple of football field's distance away from the New York State Governor's office I can tell you how they manage to find the time - they have a staff to call the painter, a personal assistant to order the skillet, a set of events people to decorate the mansion, people who drive them everywhere so they don't have to find a parking spot every morning etc. Of course, if it were me I'd use the extra time to get a budget in on time, find funding for schools, (or maybe hook up with matt damon if he were available).

I have missed you all! We have been on Spring Break and had family here so it's been a little crazy! I'm with @pril...who has the time for an affair?? Truly, I just don't get it?? His wife and daughters "seem" so lovely. Why, Why, Why? I'm just spiteful enough...that I would stay with him and demand many things I'd always wanted---I kid...a little! KRISTIN FOR PRESIDENT!!!! Happy Weekend to everyone!

    Posted by: Staci| March 28, 2008 at 11:05 AM

Kristin, speaking as a former job hunter, PLEASE call those two women right away. Believe me, they're dying to hear from you, and if you call them today to offer them jobs, they'll each have great weekends because they'll be so happy!

As for the rest of your post, I love it! I have my daughter's best friend coming for a sleepover tonight and have I cleaned the kitchen or bathroom? No, I have not. Why not? Because last night, I was knitting! I am so proud of myself because I have one sleeve of the sweater I lovingly refer to as "the perpetual Manos" DONE! I'll start the other sleeve tonight.

Daughter and friend are 8 and I don't think they'll notice or care that the above mentioned spaces are not OR-clean. Especially if I make them quesadillas for dinner and let them eat them while watching a movie!

    Posted by: Anne| March 28, 2008 at 03:21 PM

Anne, you and your daughter will be happy that you didn't clean, because they will just make a mess that you'll have to clean again. And why do it twice! And I did call both women about the jobs, so I can scratch that off my list.

Rachel, I'm not sure what job you applied for here, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't this one. Anything else I should know?

Dear Rachel, thanks for the tip! Good luck with your job search!

    Posted by: Chris| March 30, 2008 at 01:31 PM

I read this Friday, and had to come back this morning to see if there was any news about Rachel and the job. That was very nice of you, Kristin, to post a response. Good luck, Rachel.

    Posted by: Louise| March 31, 2008 at 01:08 PM

Kristin, I agree with Louise that it was nice of you to post a response. As far as the additional information you should know, it was an ‘Editorial Assistant’ position and although I knew there was a possibility that we weren’t talking about the same job, I decided that posting here would give me one more opportunity to express a little of my personality and interest in the magazine (and website) on the off chance that it WAS the position of which you were speaking. Maybe you could put in a good word for me in the Home Department (wink). :)
Also, thank you to Chris and Louise for the well-wishes! You’ve put a smile on my face that won’t come off until at least Spinning class tonight! Everyone have a great week!

You can drive yourself to shame by thinking that there are 24 perfectly useful hours in everyday and if we are not dong something we are wasting time. One needs to find a balance that allows them to take advantage of those hours and minutes when they are feeling ambitious but recognizing that they need to enjoy themselves too. After all, if we can't enjoy our hard work, why are we working so hard?
