The Best Thing I Did All Week
Posted on Feb 29, 2008 10:12:17 AM  |  By KristinVanOgtrop

The last four days have been full of lots of things, some less wonderful than others:

  • Laundry
  • Pink eye
  • Performance evaluations
  • Ordering kitchen curtains
  • Head colds
  • Dead hamster
  • Babysitter in the emergency room
  • Big media deals
  • Sudafed extra-strength non-drowsy
  • Office moves
  • Science project
  • Insomnia

  • Last night after a perfect winter's night dinner (roast chicken, carrots and potatoes with broccoli on the side) Baby and I were on our way to the bath when we were drawn to the racket in the study. There Eldest and Middle were blaring music (Fatboy Slim, Rolling Stones) and doing some weird sort of fighting game that was set to the music and resulted in injury (mostly jammed fingers) about every 3 minutes.

Anyway, Baby and I convinced them to turn it into a dance party, at least temporarily, and so the big boys put on "Mambo #5" which they know is Mom's favorite song, and we all danced. The one who had the most fun might have been Baby, who was not wearing a diaper and so was already living dangerously. But it was one of those moments — all too rare in the nonsense of daily life — when you think to yourself: this is why I had kids.

    Fantastic. Enjoy your weekend!

When My Oldest was about 3 1/2 he would sing this to us...of course only a few of the phrases! Cutest thing EVVA! I think what else is sweet is that your boys knew you loved it and chose to play it! Just playing it right now makes me want to get up and dance! Welp, we are off to THE GREAT WOLF LODGE for lots of water fun! I'm hoping to experience a lot of those moments you were talking about! Of course, after I have wiped our room down with Lysol wipes! You think I'm kidding, but sadly, I am not! (Still, I would call it a trip! HA! ) Hope everyone makes the most of their weekend!

That's wonderful - and even better that you can write about it for work and thus record it for eternity (my biggest struggle, living in the moment). The best things I experienced all week: beautiful crushing hugs from my middle child (7) when I got home last night; my youngest child (5) getting up every day this week brushing and 'styling' (well, a clip, but still) her OWN hair, making her bed and dressing herself with nary a whine nor request for assistance (hooray); lastly, my eldest child putting together the coolest, hippest power point any third grader has ever done (not biased here) for his presentation on a biography of Thomas Jefferson. Most certainly a good week. Now next week when the kids have Spring Break and we have no plans to do anything, and Mom will be at work all week -- not thinking we will have many high points, but here's hoping all the same!

Dancing with the kids is the best! We've gotten into the habit of putting loud music on during dinner clean up - it makes it much more fun to dance around while doing the dishes!

I had a "this is why I had kids" moment Wednesday night. I was sitting on the floor in front of the fireplace with mounds of laundry in baskets surrounding me. I was dreading the next 2 hours of folding. Then, my Number 2, brought a huge stack of books for me to read to her before bed. Then, Number 1 and Number 3 joined us in the mounds of clothes. We were reading a book about a Dog who was a fireman—firedog, he was supposed to "do his duty." And for some reason the phrase caused a huge outburst of laughter and giggles, everytime! So funny, we laughed till we cried then all went to bed happy with no winning or crying. Just happy. And as I folded clothes till after midnight, I couldn't help but think this is why I had kids.

FYI - love the Mambo song - My new favorite is Tim Armstrong, (Let's get moving) Into Action.
What are other good - "dancing with the kids songs"?

What a nice moment with your kiddos! When I was summoned to "come far, far away with me" under the coolest fort ever--building direction courtesy of a 3.5 year old in a construction hat--this evening while babysitting, I had a [somewhat relatable] this-is-why-I-want-kids-someday moment. That someday might be far away, but I'm glad to borrow someone else's for now!

P.S. The Pottery Barn Kids Play-Date CD is a great mix of get-you-going tunes that I absolutely highly recommend!

Well, sometimes I wish I had some of your life. Wow, the editor of THE best magazine (I like to consider Real Simple a life tool, really),
    Then again...
I don't wish you mishaps in your life (babysitter in the ER...etc.), but I'm glad you share that you're in the trenches - as well as the hills of moral victory - with the rest of us. I love to read about your experiences, and about how the other amazing women (wow, Amber - I loved your story) relate too. I have two teens, so validating moments for me are different - but not:
I listen to jazz when I cook in the kitchen. There are certian songs that come on (most notably, "Fantasy" by Earth, Wind and Fire) when I yell out, "Kitchen Dance!!"
Everyone knows Mom is dancing in the kitchen and everyone is invited (I do this even when no one's home...oh well). If I'm lucky, the girl teen (16)will come out and take a twirl with me on the tile. The boy teen (14) will say, "Ah Mom..." meaning "You're so weird," but with a smile. Dad just loves the idea from afar in the livingroom. One day I was looking at my MP3 favorites and noticed one of my favorite composers, Dave Grusin, wrote "Kitchen Dance." Mom's not so crazy after all, I guess.
This is why I had a family.

Those impromptu moments are the best! Your story reminds me of when my now 11 yr old daughter was not quite a year old and her big sister, Dad and I would dance around the living room to Louis Armstrong's "Hellzapoppin." I can still hear her ecstatic giggles....

What a great way to end your week and start your weekend! Mine dance too and turn off lights while one spins the travel-sized light bright...they invented it not knowing that junior high consisted of a similar show at the roller rink for Mom :-)

Love this story I don't know how many times this has happened-the music different although-classic eighties rock, and always a good laugh to watch the kids cabbage patch to ACDC.

Don't you love those moments!? I had one the other day. I was making dinner, and my 4 yo son was singing, making up a song about dinosaurs, and playing with his dinosaur toys. I had one of those moments when I just thought, "I want to remember this moment forever."
