Observations
Field Trip
Posted on Oct 26, 2007 10:57:52 AM  |  By KristinVanOgtrop

Quote of the day:

"We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children."

I saw this at the Museum of Natural History last week when I was on a field trip with what felt like 7,000 fourth graders, one of whom is a member of my family. Going on a field trip for me is like trying to herd cats after you’ve taken an Ambien. This particular field trip no doubt raised my blood pressure a few notches, but I was moved by this quote, which is carved in a doorway at the museum. It is a Kenyan proverb. I think. And it may or may not be above a doorway; maybe it’s next to a door. I do know that when you are accompanying 7,000 fourth graders to a crowded New York City museum, your ability to remember a quote is fairly limited, at least if you’re me.

Love that quote. Reminds me try and be a little "greener". Even if you aren't a parent, you can still do small things to help keep the earth in good shape for the next generation of children. Maybe you can even do big things!

How powerful it would be if more people stopped to digest messages like this, how powerful indeed.

I lived a single life - singularly self concerned, until I married (at 37) and had my first child (at 38). All of a sudden the world was something I worried about. For the first time. Everything was different.
Now that they're teens (I had a second child at 40) we are all living to make the world better in our way, as we can. I hope they continue this momentum, when they take control of their children's world.

I also am reminded to be "greener" when I see that quote. And then sometimes I have very dark thoughts about my children's future and their children's. . .

I love going on field trips with my children!!!!
If you were a responsible parent, you wouldn't dare post negative things about your children online!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is Kayden being sarcastic?

I love going on field trips with kids, my own, or other peoples, but I would never criticize anyone else for not enjoying it.....it takes all kinds, and while I take the little animals on field trips, some other mother can do some of the activities I absolutely can not tolerate, like being cooped up in a room with them during "class parties." Shudder! I'll bring food, drop it and RUN in order not to get pulled into the dreaded class party. Too much noise, too much movement in too confined a space! Bring on the field trip any day.

That is a very wise quote We have 6 grandchildren, the youngest are twins 9 months, & I surely would want the world a much cleaner & safer place for them & their children to come. I always tried to go on field trips with our 3 children & loved it. It was fun to be with them & watch their reactions to places & things. It was dinner theaters, amusement parks & jousting with dinner. I took photos of all of these things for them to remember with their children. We have taken our grandchildren to musems & the aquarium also, they are so much fun to listen to & watch. Enjoy these times, they pass too soon!
