While the crowds at your local fireworks display may suggest otherwise, the 4th of July tradition might not be the crowd pleaser we assume it is, at least according to our Real Simple readers on Facebook.
In a completely unscientific poll, we asked our fans to fill in the blank: “I ____ fireworks.” At the time of writing, more than 800 people have responded.
The results? About half love the light show—at least, they do on Independence Day and not, say, at 2 AM on a random night in August. But on the other side of the coin, the other 50-odd percent actively hate fireworks. The main reason: Those loud booms.
A few highlights from our community:
“I need to see them every year! My husband knew how much I loved them so he even proposed to me under the grand finale.” —Alyssa B.
“As pretty as they are, the sound and lights are awful for someone with chronic migraine!” —Laurie A.E.
“I dislike fireworks because by choosing to set them off, or watch them, we’re actively participating in terrifying animals and polluting our environment. And, of course, because they can kill birds.” —Vanessa J.
“[I] am still completely thrilled by [them].” —Christi C.
“Hate ‘em because my dog is so afraid. I’ll have to carry my dog outside all weekend because she won’t go out voluntarily.” —Emily H.
“[I] get bored watching.” —Melissa J.R.
