A Must-Read Site for Nostalgia Lovers

Are you a fan of quirky vintage photos and facts? If you consider yourself a nostalgia junkie, you’ll definitely want to visit Retronaut brought to you by Chris Wild, a guest curator at the Woodhorn Museum and Northumberland Archives, in England. Once there, just punch in a subject or an era (from B.C. to the aughts), and—boom—tons of historic images, wacky inventions (1950s telephone hats), and other treasures.

One of our favorites posts? “US Bikini Laws.” In 1922, police in Washington DC measured women’s swimming costumes (above) to make sure that none were more than six inches above the knee.

Suddenly in the mood for a modern swimsuit? Try one of these options.

that’s Washington State?!? what is that tower structure in the background ? I haven’t seen anything like that around here…
……..ok, I had to satisfy my curiosity because I thought that structure in the background was weird. I thought it looked like the Washington monument. if you look at the original caption on retronaut, they refer to the tidal basin, ie, Washington DC:

“Washington policeman Bill Norton measuring the distance between knee and suit at the Tidal Basin bathing beach after Col. Sherrell, Superintendent of Public Buildings and Grounds, issued an order that suits not be over six inches above the knee.”
