15-stress-opener_300With all of the stress and pressures of modern life, anxiety can feel like your constant companion—but that doesn’t have to be the case. Turns out, you already possess everything you need to clear your mind, calm your nerves, and defeat that nagging anxious feeling in the pit of your stomach.

How? It’s simple: Meditation. Even if you don’t think of yourself as the mediating type, there are some compelling reasons to give it a try. For example, regular meditation can decrease your anxiety levels by a whopping 22 percent, according to a study in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience. And anyone can do it!

Here’s a smart technique for beginners, courtesy of Lori Lite, parenting expert and author of Stress Free Kids ($16, amazon.com): Start by closing your eyes. Imagine your favorite color, and allow it to fill up your mind, pushing out all other thoughts. Try this method while you’re waiting in line or during your commute (assuming you aren’t driving!) for a dose of calm while you’re on-the-go.
