Confused about what exactly to use to apply your base? Powders are pretty straightforward: Use a powder brush. But here’s a good rule of thumb for wetter textures: For less viscous formulas (think: bb or cc creams or tinted moisturizers), take a hands-on approach. For thicker consistencies (say, heavy liquid or cream foundations), opt for a sponge, says Virginia Linzee, a New York City-based makeup artist for Mary Kay cosmetics.
Linzee adds that for the most seamless finish when working with any wet makeup, consider using both. “Start by dotting the makeup onto your face with your fingers, then blend it into all the nooks and crannies with a sponge.”
