sewing kitA missing button is frustrating, but the first step to fixing the problem—threading a needle—can be just as infuriating. If you’re sewing smarts are minimal, Beth Baumgartel, author of Simple Sewing, explains how to thread a needle with ease.

First unwind 18 to 24 inches of thread from the spool. Then, cut at an angle with scissors and point the angled end through the needle. If you’re having trouble, wet the end with your tongue and twist it; or try a needle threader–a flat disk with a wire loop that guides the thread through (To buy: $3 for three, amazon.com).

If you’d rather leave sewing to the professionals, try these quick (no-sew) clothing fixes.
